Orcier is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Orcier is located at 653  m , seven kilometers south of the town of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in Chablais, on a plateau south of Lake Geneva , at the northern foot of the Savoy Pre-Alps.

The area of ​​the 9.39 km² municipal area includes a section of the Chablais with the northern Savoy Prealps. The north-western part of the municipal area lies on the Orcier plateau ( 620  m ), which is drained by the Ruisseau des Blaves and its source streams north to Lake Geneva. To the south and south-east, the municipality extends over a steep slope to the area of ​​the Col du Feu and the densely wooded ridge of the Mont d'Hermone, on which the highest point of Orcier is reached at 1,412  m .

history

The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Orsinus . Orcier is first mentioned in the 15th century.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Jacques dates from the 19th century in its current form, but various elements of the previous buildings from the 15th to 17th centuries were integrated into the building. The Notre-Dame-d'Hermone pilgrimage chapel stands on the ridge of Mont d'Hermone ( 1328  m ).

With 981 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Orcier is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades the population has grown steadily.

Economy and Infrastructure

Orcier was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are various local small businesses. A large number of employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Thonon-les-Bains.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from Thonon-les-Bains via the D12 connecting road. Further road connections exist with Draillant, Lyaud and via the Col du Feu with Lullin.
