Brenthonne is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Brenthonne is located at 555 m , about halfway between Thonon-les-Bains and Annemasse , 13 kilometers southwest of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in Bas-Chablais east of the Foron , at the northern foot of the Col de Saxel pass.
The area of the 8.38 km² municipal area includes a section of the Bas-Chablais and the adjacent pre-Alps. The northern part of the municipal area lies in a wide lowland, which is drained by the Foron and its tributaries to the north to Lake Geneva . The area extends into the vast forests of the Bois de Savigny . To the south, the municipality extends over an initially gently, later steeply rising and densely wooded slope up to the heights in the area of the Col de Saxel. Here, at 1000 m, the Brenthonne's highest point is reached.
Community structure
In addition to the actual village center, Brenthonne also includes various other villages and hamlet settlements. From north to south these are:
- Puard ( 545 m )
- Avully ( 570 m )
- Morzier ( 570 m )
- Vigny ( 559 m )
- Gros Perrier ( 590 m )
- Dugny ( 622 m )
Brenthonne's neighboring communities are Fessy in the east, Saxel in the south and Bons-en-Chablais in the west.
history
Traces from Roman times indicate that the area around Brenthonne was settled very early. The name Brenthonne first appears in the documents towards the end of the 12th century.
Attractions
The oldest parts of the church, which have been changed several times over the years, date from the 13th and 15th centuries. To the east of the village is the Château d'Avully, which was built in the 12th century and has largely retained its medieval appearance with a drawbridge, mighty keep and towers in the Savoyard style.
