history

The area around Massongy was already inhabited in Roman times. Numerous remains (coins, brick and ceramic fragments, wall foundations, graves) from that period have been found near the village and along the important traffic route south of Lake Geneva, which passed the area.

The place name appears for the first time as a massier in the documents in the 14th century . The names Massongiacus and Massongier have been handed down from a later period . Presumably the name is derived from the Gallo-Roman personal name Massonius and therefore means estate of Massonius .

Attractions

The village church originally dates from the 12th century. The bell tower and the nave underwent a major renovation in 1822. The rectory was rebuilt in 1838. The Château de Quincy, built as a castle in the Middle Ages, was demolished in the 19th century and replaced by the current building.

White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .

Today there are various local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns or in the agglomeration of Geneva.

The village is on the N5 main road from Geneva to Thonon-les-Bains. Further road connections exist with Ballaison, Messery and Yvoire .
