Montriond is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Montriond is located at 944 m , near the tourist resort of Morzine , 25 kilometers southeast of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in Chablais , in a valley widening of the Vallée d'Aulps on a terrace east of the Dranse de Morzine , in the Savoy Alps .
The area of the 24.71 km² municipal area includes a section of the Vallée d'Aulps. The Dranse de Morzine, which runs from south-south-east to north-north-west in a mostly about 300 m wide, flat valley floor, forms the western boundary of the municipality. From this river course, the municipality extends eastward and includes the entire catchment area of the Montriond valley, in which the Lac de Montriond is located. The valley is flanked in the south by the Montagne de Séraussaix , in the north by the Pointe d'Entre deux Pertuis ( 2180 m ) and the Pointe de la Chavache ( 2081 m ). To the east, the municipal area extends to the Col de Chésery , which connects to the Val de Morgins in Switzerland , and to the Pointe de Vorlaz , on which Montriond's highest peak is reached at 2347 m .
The hamlets and holiday settlements of Les Granges ( 880 m ) and Le Crêt ( 942 m ) at the entrance to the Montriond valley, L'Elex ( 972 m ) east of the Dranse de Morzine as well as Le Lavanchy ( 975 m ) and Les Lindarets belong to Montriond ( 1476 m ) in the valley of Montriond. Neighboring municipalities of Montriond are Morzine in the south, Essert-Romand in the west, Saint-Jean-d'Aulps and Abondance in the north and the Swiss municipalities of Val-d'Illiez and Champéry in the east.
history
The place name is derived from the Latin term mons rotundus (round mountain). Montriond was raised to an independent municipality in 1740; previously it belonged to Saint-Jean-d'Aulps.
Attractions
The village church was built in the 18th century on the site of an earlier chapel. It houses a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century. The Lac de Montriond is a natural attraction.

With 905 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montriond is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. A significant increase in population has been recorded since the early 1960s. Numerous single-family houses and holiday apartments were built outside the old town center.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Montriond was a predominantly agricultural village. In the meantime, the village has developed into a residential and holiday resort thanks to its proximity to Morzine. The slopes above Ardent and Les Lindarets are accessible by numerous mountain railways and ski lifts. This means that Montriond is part of the large, cross-border winter sports area of Portes du Soleil .
The village is on the main road from Thonon-les-Bains to Morzine. Another road connection is with Les Lindarets and the Col de la Joux Verte at the winter sports resort of Avoriaz .
