La Chapelle-d'Abondance , until 1961 officially La Chapelle called, is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
La Chapelle-d'Abondance is located at 1020 m , 25 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The street village extends in the Chablais , on an alluvial cone at the confluence of a side valley in the valley of the Dranse d'Abondance , in the northern Savoy Alps .
The area of the 37.85 km² municipal area includes a section of the Vallée d'Abondance. In the area of La Chapelle-d'Abondance, the valley is oriented from east to west and mostly has a flat valley floor around 500 m wide. To the south the community area extends to the summit of Mont de Grange , on which the highest point of La Chapelle-d'Abondance is reached at 2,433 m . In the east, the municipal border (also the national border between France and Switzerland) runs on the mountain ridge that separates the Vallée d'Abondance from the Rhone Valley . Striking peaks of this ridge are Haut Sex ( 1961 m ), Le Linleu ( 2093 m ), Tête d'Avalanche ( 1852 m ) and Sex du Coeur ( 2019 m ). The mountain lake Lac d'Arvouin lies in a hollow west of the Linleu .
To the north, the municipality extends into the valley of the Ruisseau de Chevenne , which is framed by the rugged limestone peaks of Mont Chauffé ( 2095 m ) and the Cornettes de Bise ( 2432 m ). Further to the north, the uppermost part of the catchment area of the Eau Noire with the Alpine settlement Chalets de Bise ( 1506 m ) and the Lac de Bise , which dries up in dry seasons , also belong to the parish of La Chapelle-d'Abondance.
La Chapelle-d'Abondance includes the hamlets of Passengué ( 990 m ), La Pantiaz ( 1015 m ) and La Ville du Nant ( 1038 m ), all located on the main road in the Dranse d'Abondance valley. Neighboring communities of La Chapelle-d'Abondance are Châtel in the south, Abondance and Vacheresse in the west, Novel in the north and the Swiss communities Vouvry and Vionnaz in the east.
history
The village is first mentioned in 1219 under the name La Chapelle des Frasses , which it kept until 1660. After that, the community was temporarily called Chapelle-en-Chablais and La Chapelle Blanche , before the simple place name La Chapelle prevailed. Today's official name La Chapelle-d'Abondance was introduced by decree on February 27, 1961 .
Attractions
The village church, located between La Chapelle-d'Abondance and Passengué, was built in the 18th century. In the old town there is a chapel from 1662. The Chapelle du Nant in the district of La Ville du Nant was built in 1656. The municipality has a ski museum that shows the development of this sport from 1890 to 1960.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, La Chapelle-d'Abondance was a predominantly agricultural village. In the meantime the village has developed into a summer and winter sports station with numerous tourist facilities. The slopes on Mont de Grange and on the ridge east of the Vallée d'Abondance are accessible by mountain railways and ski lifts. This means that La Chapelle-d'Abondance is part of the cross-border winter sports region of Portes du Soleil .
The village is on the main road that leads from Thonon-les-Bains through the Vallée d'Abondance and over the Pas de Morgins to Monthey in the Swiss canton of Valais .
