Saxel is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Saxel is located at 900 m , about 20 kilometers east of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement community extends south of the Col de Saxel pass crossing in a northern side valley of the Vallée Verte in the northwestern Savoy Alps .
The area of the 5.63 km² large municipality covers a section of the western Chablais Alps. The main part of the municipal area is drained from the Brevon , which rises at Col de Saxel, south to the Menoge . To the north, the area extends over the wide saddle of the Col de Saxel to the catchment area of the Foron , a southern tributary of Lake Geneva . On both sides of the pass, the communal soil extends to the adjacent heights, in the west to the slopes of Les Voirons , in the east to the height above Supersaxel. Here, at 1298 m, the highest elevation of Saxel is reached.
Various hamlet settlements belong to Saxel, including Challande ( 895 m ), Chez Lanceyme ( 920 m ) and Clavel ( 975 m ), all in the area of the Col de Saxel. The neighboring municipalities of Saxel are Bons-en-Chablais and Brenthonne in the north, Fessy and Burdignin in the east and Boëge in the west.
history
The place name is derived from the Latin word saxellum (small rock). Saxel belonged to the canton of Douvaine until 1860 before it was assigned to the newly created canton of Boëge. With this canton, it moved from the Arrondissement Bonneville to the Arrondissement Thonon-les-Bains in 1939 .
Attractions
The renaissance style village church was built in 1840 with a clover leaf floor plan.

Economy and Infrastructure
Saxel is still a predominantly agricultural village today. Winter sports can be practiced at Supersaxel on the slope east of the village. The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from Bons-en-Chablais over the Col de Saxel to Boëge. A local road leads from Saxel to the ridge of Les Voirons (Monastère de Bethléem).
