Margencel is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Margencel is located at 473 m , five kilometers southwest of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in Bas-Chablais in a panoramic location around 100 m above the south bank of Lake Geneva , on a moraine of the Ice Age Rhone glacier .
The area of the 7.38 km ² municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Geneva; however, the lakeshore is only 0.5 km. The municipal area extends from the flat lake shore (Golfe de Coudrée) southwards over a gently rising slope on both sides of the Ruisseau du Redon valley . In the south the area extends into the extensive forests of the Forêt de Planbois , in which Margencel's highest elevation is reached at 530 m .

In addition to the actual village center, Margencel also includes various other villages and hamlet settlements. From north to south these are:
- Port de Séchex ( 373 m ) on the lake shore east of the mouth of the Ruisseau du Redon
- Séchex ( 410 m ) on the plateau east of the Ruisseau du Redon
- Peylevet ( 423 m ) on the main road
- Ronsuaz ( 435 m ) in a side valley of the Ruisseau du Redon
- Revachaux ( 446 m ) on the plateau east of the Ruisseau du Redon
- Bisselinge ( 460 m ) at Margencel
- Dursilly ( 475 m ) on the moraine east of Margencel
- Zusinges ( 460 m ) east of the Ruisseau du Redon
- Jouvernex ( 460 m ) on a hill west of the Ruisseau du Redon
Margencel's neighboring municipalities are Anthy-sur-Léman in the north, Allinges in the east, Perrignier in the south and Sciez in the west.
history
The area around Margencel was inhabited very early. The oldest traces come from the Neolithic . Various objects have also been found from Roman times . The place name was first mentioned in a document in the early 15th century.
Attractions
The village church was built in the 15th century and has been changed several times since then. Late medieval houses from the 16th century have been preserved in Jouvernex. The Château de la Bédoyère dates from the 19th century.

With 2145 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Margencel is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades there has been a continuous strong growth in the number of inhabitants. Larger single-family houses were built between the town centers.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Margencel was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are various local small businesses as well as construction and trading companies. Mainly establishments of the tertiary sector (shopping centers) settled on the main street. Many workers are commuters who do their work in Thonon-les-Bains.
With the Port de Séchex, Margencel owns a small port and is connected to the neighboring lake communities by passenger shipping on Lake Geneva. The village is close to the main road N5 that leads from Geneva to Thonon-les-Bains. There are other road connections with Allinges and Anthy-sur-Léman.
