geography

Vailly is located at 789  m above sea level, nine kilometers south-southeast of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central Chablais , in the Vallée du Brevon, on the lower southeast slope of the Mont d'Hermone, in the northern Savoy Alps .

The area of the 18.89 km² municipal area includes a section of the Vallée du Brevon. The Brevon , a left tributary of the Dranse , crosses the area from south to north in an open valley; only below Vailly does it sink deep into the surroundings. The Follaz flows into the valley from the southwest . To the northwest, the community area extends to the densely wooded ridge of Mont d'Hermone ( 1412  m ). To the east of the Brevon, the area extends to the ridge that separates the Vallée du Brevon from the Vallée d'Aulps. The craggy limestone peaks of Grande Pointe des Journées ( 1725  m ), Mont Billiat (at 1894  m, the highest point in Vailly) and Grande Chaux ( 1793  m ) are located here.

With 910 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Vailly is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. After the population had decreased markedly in the course of the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 Vailly still had 1,209 inhabitants), only slight fluctuations in the number of inhabitants have been recorded since the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Vailly was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are various local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Thonon-les-Bains.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares, but is relatively easy to reach from Thonon-les-Bains on the D26, which leads to Saint-Jeoire . Further road connections exist with Lullin and La Vernaz.
