Railway stations in Berlin |
The Wollankstraße station is located on the 1877 opened Berlin's northern runway . It is located in the Berlin district of Pankow in the district of the same name and was an exception during the existence of the Berlin Wall : the sector border ran directly here, the station was on East Berlin territory, but only had access from West Berlin .
history
When it opened, the station was still called Prinzenallee and until 1891 it was only a stop-off point . Due to its location in the Berlin district of Pankow , it was renamed Pankow (Prinzenallee) in 1879 and Pankow (Nordbahn) in 1893 . On May 1, 1911, the name addition was removed.
After the line had been raised in 1903, the main entrance was relocated from Sternstrasse to Wollankstrasse, but access from Sternstrasse was retained. The northern line was one of the first lines to be electrified, so that electric S-Bahn operations began here on June 5, 1925. On October 3, 1937, the station was given its current name Wollankstraße .
Due to bomb damage , the station was closed from April to June 1945; electrical operations were resumed on July 19, 1945.
Due to its location, the station was a specialty after the Wall was built : It belonged to the western sub-network of the S-Bahn, but was in the former East Berlin district of Pankow. It was in operation, had an open exit to the western sector directly on the border line and could therefore be used from the western part without control. A sign next to the entrance warned passers-by about this situation. The wall ran immediately to the east of the train station, its entrances to East Berlin were blocked. The station initially offered a view of East Berlin apartments, and later of the so-called death strip . He caused a stir in 1962 when, after the platform surface had subsided , an escape tunnel was discovered that had been dug from the west by the S-Bahn viaduct.
After the takeover of the S-Bahn in West Berlin on January 9, 1984 by the western bodies, the BVG only carried out a "rump operation" on the West S-Bahn, the Wollankstrasse station was not one of them. Due to protests and the like a. the Frohnauer citizens was the S-Bahn line towards Frohnau taken (where you will also Wollankstraße train station) 1 October 1984 again. Due to its special location, however, the station was under the administration of the Reichsbahndirektion Berlin . The staff for the station came from East Berlin until German reunification and wore the uniforms of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The train dispatchers reached the station through a small door that was directly connected to the border security systems. The station equipment corresponded to the DR standard.
Immediately to the southeast of the station is the bridge over Wollankstrasse. Their superstructures had to be partially replaced by auxiliary bridges due to their poor condition. This took place in 2015 for the track axis of the long-distance railway that was still in use and in spring 2017 for the two S-Bahn tracks.
Both the train station and the railway bridge over Wollankstrasse are now listed as historical monuments .
Connection
The S-Bahn station is served by the S1, S25 and S26 lines of the Berlin S-Bahn. It is possible to change to the bus lines 250, 255 and M27 of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe .
