Location and structure

North staircase

The station is one and a half times lower than Tucholskystraße at the corner of Oranienburger Straße . The original access is via two solidly fenced staircases on both sides of Oranienburger Straße, which are indicated by a circular S-Bahn symbol. The symbol was introduced with the construction of the North-South S-Bahn. The entrances lead to a common distribution floor, from where two stairways lead to the platform. Several service rooms are connected to the distribution floor. Another access to Tucholskystraße and an elevator system at the northern end of the platform were added later.

The platform is located in the middle and is supported by a row of single-legged columns. Columns and platform superstructures are clad in orange, based on the station name, and the side walls with yellowish ceramic tiles. The station names are shown in the Tannenberg script .

Richard Brademann designed the entire system . It is listed as an architectural monument in the Berlin State Monument List.

history

Oranienburger Strasse station sign from 1936 in the Tannenberg script

The station was built between 1934 and 1936 and opened on July 27, 1936 together with the section Stettiner Bahnhof - Unter den Linden , scheduled operation from the following day. The S-Bahn traffic came to a standstill in April 1945 due to the war. As a result of the subsequent blasting of the tunnel ceiling at the level of the Landwehr Canal on May 2, 1945 and damage to the Spree underpass at the level of the nearby Ebertsbrücke , the entire structure including the S-Bahn station flooded. The pumping-out work that began on May 25, 1945 and the subsequent repairs to the tunnel continued until the end of 1947. Regular passenger services were resumed on November 16, 1947.

As a result of the construction of the wall , the station was closed to all public traffic on August 13, 1961, the trains of the north-south S-Bahn passed through all stops in East Berlin with the exception of Friedrichstrasse station . The above-ground access was closed, partially built in and the S-Bahn symbol removed.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the Deutsche Reichsbahn began the makeshift repairs to the station. The reopening took place one day after the currency reform on July 2, 1990 as the first station on the north-south route. In the same year the Reichsbahn decided to fundamentally renovate the tunnel, which meant that it was closed again between April 2, 1991 and March 1, 1992. During this measure, the S-Bahn station was renovated in accordance with a listed building.

In 2002 the station was expanded to include an elevator at the northern end of the platform. For reasons of fire protection law, the installation of a further entrance to Tucholskystraße began in 2010;

Since August 2016, train handling has been carried out by the driver using the driver's cab monitor (ZAT-FM).

Connection

The S-Bahn station is currently served by lines S1, S2, S25 and S26 of the S-Bahn Berlin. On the surface there are transfer options to the tram lines M1, M5, M6 and 12 of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe .
