The Berlin-Karow station is a regional and S-Bahn station in the Berlin district of the same name, Karow, in the Pankow district . The station is in the railway authorities operating Jobs Directory as BKAR (mainline) and for the S-Bahn as BKRW out. Tracks 3 and 4 are used for passenger traffic on the S-Bahn and the regional trains of the Niederbarnimer Railway that end in Karow , while tracks 1 and 2 are used by long-distance and regional trains and for freight traffic. These tracks have no platforms and are therefore only used for passages. Track 3s is a siding on which short trains can be parked. In the case of longer turning times of the trains from the direction of Basdorf, the platform track for the S-Bahn can meanwhile be cleared.

history

The station, initially called Carow , was set up on November 15, 1882 on the Szczecin Railway . From here suburban trains drove to Berlin and in the opposite direction to Bernau . Between 1911 and 1916 the line was expanded to four tracks as far as Bernau. Next to the platform, the long-distance tracks were relocated so that suburban traffic could be routed separately via Karow. The measure should also create the conditions for electrical operation on the suburban tracks; this was realized on August 8, 1924.

During the Second World War, the outer freight ring was built, which reached the Stettiner Bahn in Berlin-Karow. No further construction to the west was made. After the Second World War , the second track of the long-distance or suburban tracks was dismantled and shipped to the Soviet Union . Since Karow was not a passing point, the western track was dismantled here as well. The outer freight ring was also initially dismantled, but rebuilt in 1949. In 1950, the Berlin-Karow – Fichtengrund railway line was built to bypass West Berlin as a connection to the Berlin Northern Railway via Basdorf . A depot was built on the long-distance tracks in Berlin-Karow. A few years later, the Berlin outer ring replaced the goods outer ring as a more efficient bypass . It crosses the Stettiner Bahn south of the Karow train station in the so-called Karower Kreuz . Connecting curves to the outer ring in both directions were created from Berlin-Karow train station.

After the Berlin Wall was built , the Heidekrautbahn trains used the connection between Basdorf and Karow and first passed the station via the long-distance tracks, before ending one station later in Blankenburg . Since 1976, these trains have ended in Karow instead of Blankenburg, and the platform in Blankenburg that was specially built for these trains was demolished. Here they still stop on the same platform as the trains of the Berlin S-Bahn. For a long time it was planned to convert the line from Karow to Basdorf and the subsequent Heidekrautbahn to Wandlitzsee into an electric S-Bahn .

Since July 7, 2010, the station has had a second, barrier-free entrance at its northern end and a new station forecourt with a bus turning loop. The new building was financed with funds from the State of Berlin and the Federal Government's economic stimulus package I. At the same time, a new guidance system for the blind was installed and the platform lighting was renewed.

At Karower Kreuz a new tower station is to be built for the regional train and the S-Bahn (line S2), for the regional train stop there, the stop at Karow station is to be omitted. However, this depends on the further expansion of the Szczecin Railway in this section. The earliest start of construction was expected in 2015.

Connection

The station can be reached with the RB27 of the Niederbarnimer Railway, the S2 line of  the Berlin S-Bahn and the BVG bus line 350 .

accident

Regional Express after the accident

On April 16, 2009 around 10:17 p.m., the approximately 80 km / h fast Regional Express  38399 from Schwedt drove through the station track 2 on the freight train FTZ 53185 from the PCK refinery , which was traveling at around 40 km / h h drove in the same direction. Its 24 tank cars filled with liquid gas (LPG) withstood the stress. The first car of the regional train was partially pushed onto the electric locomotive, both vehicles derailed and were badly damaged. The damage was estimated at around 800,000 euros. Of the 24 passengers on the Regional Express, eleven passengers lost weight and the train driver was seriously injured. The responsible dispatcher also came to the hospital with a shock.

Before the accident, the freight train braked in the area of track 2 between the entry and exit signals of the station to around 10 km / h. The driver noticed that the route was set incorrectly - the train was to be diverted due to a construction site, which the dispatcher had not taken into account. After the route was corrected, the dispatcher created the term for the exit signal in the now correct route for the approaching freight train and erroneously set the entry signal behind the train on its way without waiting for the freight train to cover the still in The exit signal to be stopped was located. As a result, the following Regional Express was signaled a free passage and accelerated and a short time later drove onto the freight train.

In September 2011 the dispatcher was found guilty of negligent bodily harm and sentenced to a fine of 1,750 euros.
