The Berlin-Schöneweide station is a regional and S-Bahn station in the district of Niederschöneweide in Berlin 's Treptow-Koepenick . It is located on the Berlin – Görlitz railway line (Görlitzer Bahn) . The station was one of the three notable long-distance stations in East Berlin . A marshalling yard, which is now closed, also belonged to it . In the official railway operating point directory, the S-Bahn station is listed under the abbreviation BSW and the regional station under the abbreviation BSWP .

history

The station, initially just a stop at the foothills of the rural community of Niederschöneweide at the gates of Berlin, was set up on May 24, 1868 on the Görlitzer Bahn . At first it was referred to as the Neuer Krug , the name goes back to a restaurant in the immediate vicinity and refers to the importance of the stop for excursion traffic. In 1874 the name was changed to Neuer Krug - Johannisthal, and the rural community of Johannisthal was also located near the breakpoint. In the years 1880 to 1882, the breakpoint was expanded to the Johannisthal-Niederschöneweide train station .

Since the industry in Nieder- and Oberschöneweide developed rapidly, an intersection of numerous railway lines developed in this area. In addition to the state railway, trams and industrial railways also ran, the latter was called the Bullenbahn . In 1890/1891 a branch line to Spindlersfeld was opened from the train station ; this later became a test track for the electrical suburban traffic of the later Berlin S-Bahn.

The rural community of Niederschöneweide succeeded in renaming the station to Niederschöneweide-Johannisthal in 1895 , because on the one hand it helped to finance the extension of the route to Spindlersfeld and on the other hand several companies had private industrial railway connections to the rail network at this address. The companies in Oberschöneweide, such as the AEG factory halls built by Emil Rathenau , had a siding by means of a wooden bridge built in 1889 over the Spree . Today the Stubenrauchbrücke is located here (named after Ernst Stubenrauch , a commendable local politician).

Due to the dense development, it was necessary to raise the route to a railway embankment in order to separate it from individual traffic . The building material required for this was possibly obtained during the excavation of the Teltow Canal and the Britzer Branch Canal . At the same time, the long-distance and suburban tracks were separated and the Schöneweider passenger station was expanded to include today's six platform tracks. The renovation was completed on May 1, 1906.

The electric suburban rail traffic reached Schöneweide station from downtown Berlin. The first electric S-Bahn train reached the station on November 6, 1928. The " Great Electrification " went beyond Schöneweide to Spindlersfeld and Grünau . In 1929 the station was given its name, Schöneweide , which is still valid today .

Due to the Second World War and the subsequent division of Berlin , the Görlitzer Bahn route , which ran mainly in the GDR , now lacked the end at Görlitzer Bahnhof , as it was in West Berlin and was not accessible. The trains were therefore suspended at the stations ( Baumschulenweg , Schöneweide, Adlershof and Grünau ) or relocated to Lichtenberg . Schöneweide was the most important of these stations. The train stations in Adlershof and Grünau lost their tasks in regional traffic as early as the 1950s and were only served by S-Bahn trains for passenger traffic.

The station concourse was closed in December 2018.

The Schöneweide station not only served the traffic in the direction of the Görlitzer Bahn, but also took a large part of the traffic to other regions in the central and southern part of the GDR. In the 1970s there were direct trains from Schöneweide to Dresden, Cottbus, Dessau-Roßlau and Aschersleben. There were plans to expand the station into the third large long-distance station in the capital of the GDR (next to Ostbahnhof , later Hauptbahnhof , and Lichtenberg ). This never happened, the entire passenger train traffic in Schöneweide was always handled via a single long-distance platform.

When the adjacent trunk road 96 was expanded to six lanes in the mid-1970s , the connection between the train station and the Schöneweide district with its residential areas and industrial facilities was lost.

After the political change , long-distance traffic was systematically shifted to the Stadtbahn or to Lichtenberg , although regional traffic was initially retained to a small extent. Due to a bridge at Ostkreuz station in need of renovation , the regional trains that used to run to or from Berlin-Lichtenberg now ended or started in Schöneweide, and the long-distance tracks between Ostkreuz and Schöneweide were out of service for more than a decade.

In 2009, the train formation system of the S-Bahn to the south of the tourist facilities was completely renewed.

With the timetable change on December 11, 2011, regional traffic in Schöneweide was suspended for several years due to construction work. The OE 36 trains from Frankfurt (Oder) via Königs Wusterhausen that ended here last were diverted to Berlin-Lichtenberg station via the Berlin outer ring .

In October 2012, Deutsche Bahn announced the renewal of the railway bridges over the Sterndamm.

Since the timetable change in December 2014, the RB 36 (formerly: OE 36) only runs between Königs Wusterhausen and Frankfurt (Oder). One of the two long-distance railway tracks at Schöneweide station, which had been interrupted due to construction, came back into operation after the completion of the ring platform at Ostkreuz at the timetable change in December 2015.Since March 21, 2016, the RB 24 has stopped once an hour in both directions in Berlin-Schöneweide. As a result, the station has a direct connection to Bernau , Eberswalde , Lübbenau and Senftenberg again .

modification

As part of the complete renovation of the Görlitzer Bahn in Berlin, Schöneweide station is currently being modernized and rebuilt. The plan is to pierce the passenger tunnel to the southwest and to build a separate tunnel for the tram through the embankment as an extension of Brückenstraße. The bridges over the Sterndamm and the platforms will be renewed, the reception building modernized and the northern forecourt redesigned. A total of 45 million euros will be invested in the renovation. Construction began in March 2013 and was originally scheduled to be fully completed by 2018. Actually implemented by the end of 2018, however, was only the renewal of the bridges over the Sterndamm and the associated southern platform accesses, the latter was released on October 12 of that year.

From 2019 to 2021, the passenger tunnel and the platforms will be renewed and the tram tunnel built. The central hall built in the 1970s (between the station building and the passenger tunnel) will be demolished; a direct replacement is not yet planned. Access through the reception building has been closed since December 2018. From March 2019, the pedestrian tunnel should be closed for further construction work and access to the platforms should initially only be possible from Sterndamm. However, this was delayed because there - financed by the State of Berlin - temporary elevators had to be built there, which enable barrier-free access to the S-Bahn platforms even during the construction period. These were put into operation on September 13, 2019, after which the pedestrian tunnel could be closed. In 2019, a provisional container interlocking went into operation to replace the previous Swn relay interlocking. The construction work on the part of Deutsche Bahn will be completed with the construction of a new electronic signal box on the east side of the tracks in the years 2022 to 2024.

Connection

The station can be reached with the lines S45, S46, S47, S8, S85 and S9 of the Berlin S-Bahn and the regional train line RB 24 of the Deutsche Bahn. In addition, the station is served by five tram lines (M17, 21, 37, 60, 67) and seven day bus lines (M11, X11, 160, 163, 165, 166, 265) as well as two night bus lines (N65, N67) of the BVG . This makes Schöneweide station one of the most important transfer hubs in the south-east of Berlin.

A new tram line is currently being built between the Schöneweide S-Bahn station and the science city Adlershof over the Groß-Berliner Damm . After completion at the end of 2021, tram lines 61 and 63 from the direction of Adlershof will also run to Schöneweide.
