The Berlin-Baumschulenweg station is a S-Bahn and former long-distance train station in the Baumschulenweg part of the Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin . It is located on the Berlin-Görlitzer Railway south of the threading of the connecting railway to Neukölln on Baumschulenstrasse .

history

Pre-war history

The station was opened on May 20, 1890 on the route immediately south of Baumschulenstrasse. The establishment of the station was due, among other things, to the work of Franz Späth , who set up several tree nurseries along the street , which is why the current district and thus the train station got their name.

Around 1906 the entire railway line of the Görlitzer Bahn in the Berlin area was raised in order to avoid crossings with road traffic at the same level. The suburban traffic received its own continuous pair of tracks as far as Grünau . In Baumschulenweg, another platform was added with the elevation and extension of the route, so that local and long-distance traffic stopped at a total of four platform edges. The suburban platform received the letter A, the long-distance platform B to distinguish it.

Another expansion took place in 1916. For the connection to Neukölln, which had existed since 1896, the threading into the Görlitzer Bahn was extended due to the increased traffic volume. The line was now merged south of Baumschulenweg, so that the suburban trains from Treptow and Neukölln stopped at the same platform. A new platform C was therefore required for the opposite direction. As the space was limited, this was built above and north of Baumschulenstrasse in the form of a side platform.

On November 6, 1928, the suburban tracks were handed over to electrical operation. However, the new S-Bahn trains could only go onto the Ringbahn via Neukölln. It was not until February 1, 1929 that the northern section of the Görlitzer Bahn was electrified, making the steam trains on the suburban tracks a thing of the past. Steam-powered suburban trains continued to commute on the long-distance tracks between Görlitzer Bahnhof and Königs Wusterhausen, stopping in Baumschulenweg until 1951.

The changes in rail traffic in the Berlin area associated with the plans for the world capital Germania had only provided for minor changes for the station. The layout of the two platforms A and C was to be retained, while B was to be abandoned. For long-distance traffic, on the other hand, an extension of the track field was planned in order to make it easier to unwind the connecting line. Apart from several concrete retaining walls along the connecting track, which can still be seen today, none of the plans was implemented.

Changed usage during the Cold War

The damage caused in World War II had only a minor impact on operations. As with the other routes, the Görlitzer Bahn was affected by the reparations payments to the Soviet Union . Since S-Bahn operations would not have been possible with one track due to the main workshop in Schöneweide, only one track was dismantled on the long-distance line.

With the closure of the Görlitz train station on May 30, 1951, long-distance platform B in Baumschulenweg also gained in importance. In addition to a few normal express trains that stopped in Berlin, special trains and a few local trains also stopped to relieve the Schöneweide station . Therefore, after the wall was built, the platform was extended to the Britz branch canal .

With the construction of the wall on August 13, 1961, traffic to and from Neukölln was interrupted. The track was removed between the threading out to the sector boundary. On the other hand, a mobile substation was set up on the remaining meters behind the platform . This provided its service until the mid-1980s. Then the remaining meters of rail were also removed up to the threading.

After reunification , the reopening of the Ringbahn was one of the first measures. However, since extensive road construction work was planned between Neukölln and Treptower Park , the route was initially led via Köllnische Heide to Baumschulenweg. To do this, the systems had to be restored. The operations management was retained as in previous years, the trains from the north travel to platform A and unite behind it and the trains from the south stop at the side platform and thread out there.

Route renovation after 2000

The entire Görlitzer Bahn has been completely renovated since 2006. In the area of the Baumschulenweg train station, work was completed in December 2011 with the completion of the access structure. The transfer situation for the station has improved considerably in the course of this construction work. The side platform with the historic, listed entrance building from 1916 was retained. Platform A, on the other hand, was moved to the level of the side platform over Baumschulenstrasse, making access from both sides of the street possible. About half of the platforms received a roof, while the old cast iron roof supports of the earlier platforms were used.

The last three old bridges over Baumschulenstrasse still had the Hartung columns , which were once widespread in Berlin . These were among the last columns of this type still in use in Berlin. As part of the station renovation, the bridges were replaced by new buildings. Four of the old columns were installed in the newly created entrance hall of the station.

Since the work took place while the S-Bahn was in operation, the Görlitzer Bahn was narrowed for freight traffic to one track in the direction of Neukölln and closed for long-distance traffic. In the area of the bridge and station construction sites, the S-Bahn tracks were swiveled onto the route of the long-distance tracks, for this purpose the corresponding sections of the long-distance tracks were provided with power rails. In the area of the former long-distance platform B, a makeshift platform was built from precast elements with the platform height of 96 centimeters required for the S-Bahn.

traffic

The S-Bahn station separates the Baumschulenweg – Neukölln line from the Görlitzer Bahn or the Berlin Warschauer Straße – Königs Wusterhausen line . It is served by the S45, S46, S47, S8, S85 and S9 lines of the Berlin S-Bahn . There is a possibility to change to bus routes 170, 265 and 365 of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe .
