Franz Ludwig Späth , also Spaeth , (born February 25, 1839 in Berlin ; † February 2, 1913 in Britz ) was a Prussian- German gardener, botanist , pomologist and owner of the Späth tree nursery in today's Berlin district of Baumschulenweg . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Späth ".

Christoph Späth, an ancestor of Franz Späth, founded a vegetable and flower nursery in 1720 in the Kreuzberg area and east of the Hallesches Tor on the street Am Johannestisch . He bought the property for 300  thalers . His son Carl Späth moved the Späth'schen Gärtnerei in 1760 to the historic Luisenstadt district on the property at Köpenicker Strasse 154. The grandson Friedrich Späth designed the nursery according to his scientific and artistic interests. Great-grandson Ludwig Späth restricted growing vegetables and growing flowers.

Franz Späth, son of Ludwig Späth and his wife Dorothea Luise, b. Eckert, attended the Luisenstädtische Realgymnasium until he was 16 . After a year-long internship in his father's nursery, he attended the Kölln high school until he graduated from high school. Franz Späth studied botany at the University of Berlin . From 1860 to 1861 he got to know larger tree nurseries in Belgium, France, England and Holland. After buying the Späth'sche Gärtnerei from his father in 1863, he was now the fifth generation owner. Spaeth began during the early days of entrepreneurship in the then New Britz (now Baumschulenweg targeted and) expansive development of a nursery. In honor of his father, he had the name L. Späth entered in the commercial register in 1865 . In this way, the largest tree nursery in the world was developed in the new area by the end of the 19th century (120  hectares of fully planted contiguous terrain).

In 1874 Franz Späth had a representative manor house built on the area of ​​the tree nursery , which today serves as the institute building of the Humboldt University . Next to the manor house, a garden was built by the city gardening director Gustav Meyer until 1879 , from which today's Späth-Arboretum emerged . In 1912 his son Hellmut took over the company.

Franz Späth is buried in the Luisenstädtischer Friedhof I in Berlin-Kreuzberg in the family funeral of the Späth family. The grave is adorned with a bronze bust of Franz Späth, which was created by the artist Albert Manthe .

Memberships

  • Franz Späth was - together with his father Ludwig Späth - one of the founders of the German Pomologists Association in 1860 , of which he was 1st Chairman from 1889 to 1903. In recognition of his services, Franz Späth was made an honorary member in 1903.
  • Members of the Späth family co-founded the German Dendrological Society in 1892 .

  • In 1902 Kaiser Wilhelm II appointed Franz Späth to the Royal Prussian State Economic Council.

Naming

The Späthstrasse , the Späthsfelde settlement and the local row house settlement Späthsches Viertel are named after the founder of the arboretum . The later district Berlin-Baumschulenweg owes the nursery and the Arboretum the first paved roads as well as the today to train Berlin associated stop Baumschulenweg at the junction line to Neukölln or parallel to the railway line Berlin-Görlitz extending Vorortbahn direction King Wusterhausen .
