Ludewig Wittmack
Ludewig Wittmack , with full name Max Carl Ludewig Wittmack , also Karl and Ludwig , (born September 26, 1839 in Hamburg , † February 2, 1929 in Berlin ) was a German botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Wittm. "
Live and act
Wittmack studied botany at the University of Jena (1864) and at the University of Berlin (1865). 1867 was with the dissertation Musa Ensete. A contribution to the knowledge of bananas from the University of Göttingen to the Dr. phil. PhD.
He then “ went to Paris to continue his education, preferably in botany. “Here he was“ entrusted with the duties of a deputy judge at the World Exhibition in 1867 and was also commissioned to manage the acquisitions for the Agriculture Museum to be built in Berlin. “As recently as“ in December 1867, he entered the service of the aforementioned museum and in 1871 was employed at the same as curator. “He managed the Agricultural Museum including the plant breeding.
In 1874 he completed his habilitation at the University of Berlin. From 1880 to 1913 he was professor of botany at the Agricultural University in Berlin, from 1880 to 1920 professor of botany at the veterinary university in Berlin . From 1875 to 1905 he was director of the experiment station of the Association of German Millers. From 1883 to 1924 Wittmack was a member of the seed cultivation department at the German Agricultural Society . From April 1889 to March 1891 and again from April 1910 to March 1912 he was rector of the Agricultural University in Berlin. He held numerous honorary positions.
Wittmack wrote many writings on botanical as well as agricultural subjects. For the work Flora brasiliensis by the German botanist Karl Friedrich Philipp von Martius he contributed "Marcgraviaceae, Rihizoboleae" (for volume 12 number 1, 1858/1889), for the work The Natural Plant Families by Adolf Engler and Carl Prantl he wrote "Bromeliaceae" (Volume 2 Number 4, 1887-1888). From 1887 Wittmack was editor of the magazine Gartenflora for many years .
Honors
A plant genus Wittmackia Mez from the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) has been named in his honor, but this has long been a synonym for Aechmea . The plant genus Wittmackanthus Kuntze of the family of the redness plants (Rubiaceae) has been named in his honor. In addition, some plant species are named after him, for example Guzmania wittmackii .
Wittmack was a member of the Corps Agronomia Jenensis.
Wittmack was named a corresponding member of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in Boston, the oldest horticultural society in the United States, on April 6, 1901 .
