Location and structure

Station concourse

The S-Bahn station is located on the western edge of the Großer Tiergarten north of Straße des 17. Juni. To the west, Bachstrasse runs parallel to the central platform of the S-Bahn, which extends approximately in a north-south direction. The Berlin Pavilion is on the eastern side .

There is a station hall between the main entrance and the platform entrances .

history

The station, initially known as the Thiergarten stop , went into operation on January 5, 1885, about three years after the city railroad opened. It consisted of a central platform on the eastern pair of tracks, which was intended for the suburban trains. The platform was covered by a hall construction. The station primarily served to connect the Hansaviertel, which was built in the 1880s, and the adjacent areas of the then city of Charlottenburg . The roof of the station hall, which was designed in the Wilhelminian style, was covered with galvanized corrugated iron.

platform

On June 11, 1928, the light rail tracks leading through the station were electrified. In 1936 the station was rebuilt. The old platform hall was demolished and replaced by a simple roof structure made of steel supports. At the same time, the entire station area was redesigned in the style of Nazi architecture .

From October 30, 1994 to November 11, 1996, the station was out of service due to construction work to renovate the light rail viaduct. On July 19, 2009, the previous stopping point was operationally converted into a train station together with the transfer point of the same name to the northeast .

Since spring 2016, train handling has been carried out by the driver using a driver's cab monitor (ZAT-FM).

Connection

The S-Bahn station is currently served by the S3, S5, S7 and S9 lines of the Berlin S-Bahn. With the exception of a night bus running on the U9 subway line , there is no transfer to other local public transport.
