The Erkner station is the passenger station of the small town of Erkner east of Berlin and also the station of the S-Bahn Berlin . It is located on route kilometer 24.3 of the Lower Silesian-Märkische Railway . The station also has a railcar hall for the historic vehicles of the Berlin S-Bahn.

history

The station was opened on October 23, 1842 as one of the first on the route from Berlin to Frankfurt (Oder) . In the 1920s, a train station settlement was built here in the form of a garden city .

From 2009 to 2011, as part of the Berlin - Frankfurt (Oder) upgraded line, the tracks in the station were redesigned and the regional platforms were relocated to the south and rebuilt as side platforms . At the same time, the reception building was renovated and, from 2012, the S-Bahn platform was renewed. A total of over eight million euros were invested in the measures. In 2012 one went electronic interlocking for the mainline operation. An electronic signal box for the S-Bahn and equipment with the ZBS electronic train control system followed at the end of 2015.

Platform B, which is no longer used for passenger operations, is to be renewed in the next few years in view of the growing city. Before the station renovation, its tracks (then 4 and 5) were equipped with both power rails and overhead lines and were used jointly by S-Bahn and regional trains.

Erkner railcar hangar

Erkner railcar hangar

The Erkner railcar hangar (Twh Erk) was opened in 1928. From an administrative point of view, it was considered to be the operational site of the Berlin-Grünau depot.

With the introduction of new vehicles of the 481/482 series , a lower maintenance requirement was expected and this railcar hangar was closed in 2000. Since then, it has been run by the Association of Historic S-Bahn e. V. used with storage and social rooms. The historic trains are also located here, and minor maintenance work is also carried out on them. In January 2010 the hall was reopened for line vehicles due to a lack of capacity in connection with the crisis of the Berlin S-Bahn that had been going on since 2009 . Organizationally, it has been part of the Friedrichsfelde plant since December 2011.

The renewed use of the railcar hall as a workshop for line vehicles was to end at the end of 2019, but was initially extended to 2027 due to the foreseeable increase in the total vehicle fleet. The extent to which the demand persists depends on the contractual provisions for the tender for the Stadtbahn system that will then be issued.

Transport links
