The Berlin-Rummelsburg station is a former marshalling yard and current depot in the Berlin district of Rummelsburg in the Lichtenberg district . It is mainly used for long-distance traffic to park and maintain passenger train sets. In particular, the Intercity Express trains ending in Berlin are serviced there. Officially, the station is called Berlin-Rummelsburg , but it has nothing to do with the Berlin-Rummelsburg S-Bahn further west . In contrast, the area is accessed by public transport via the Berlin-Rummelsburg S-Bahn station (operationally designed as a stop ).

Platforms

The station is located on the Lower Silesian-Märkische Bahn between the S-Bahn stations Rummelsburg and Karlshorst . The northern pair of tracks is used for S-Bahn traffic, the other tracks are used for regional and long-distance traffic and are connected to the depot. In the western part of the station, the connection to Kaulsdorf (VnK) branches off to the northeast and crosses the S-Bahn station on a long iron truss bridge . In this area, too, a connecting line to the ring line is being threaded out. In the south-east there was an electrified connection line for freight traffic, the Bullenbahn , which opened up the industrial area in Oberschöneweide until the mid-1990s .

The S-Bahn station Betriebsbahnhof Rummelsburg has a staircase on its east side, it leads in the underpass of the tracks to Hönower Weg in one direction and to the depot in the other direction. This exit is reserved for DB employees only. A so-called people mover has been used as a barrier-free exit since June 2007 , which was set up instead of a conventional elevator for reasons of space .

history

The Prussian State Railways decided to build the facility that exists today in 1875 in order to sort the freight wagons from the Lower Silesian-Märkische Bahn to the newly built Ringbahn . It was opened on September 1, 1879 as the first train station of its kind in the Berlin area. The station received two shunting systems and a subordinate group, collecting tracks for empty and coal wagons and a local freight station. The use of several drainage peaks and sloping distribution zones were new ; previously, the same facilities had been tested at the Lower Silesian-Märkisches Bahnhof . A double-track connecting line was built to the west of the marshalling yard as a connection to the Ringbahn . In 1891/92 the station received a third maneuvering system with a waste mountain. With around 1.1 million axles maneuvered, the station was in first place among the nine marshalling yards in the Berlin area in 1895.

In 1902 the Lower Silesian-Märkische Bahn was expanded to four main tracks, with the northern one still serving suburban traffic as it is today. The marshalling yard was expanded in 1914 to include a parking area for passenger cars. In addition, there was a stop on the suburban tracks, which was initially reserved only for the workers of the depot and did not serve as a general traffic stop. From June 11, 1928, the suburban trains ran electrically, since December 1, 1930 under the name of the 'S-Bahn'.

The " Germania " plans of the National Socialists provided for an extensive expansion of the railway facilities in Rummelsburg, as this was to serve as a marshalling yard for a new Ostbahnhof to be built at Ostkreuz . But the plans were never carried out.

On January 5, 1948, the S-Bahn stop was also opened to general passenger traffic.

In the 1970s, the station was almost exclusively used as a parking area for passenger trains. From 1980 a storage and treatment facility for the transit trains between West Berlin and the Federal Republic was built , which was inaugurated on December 15, 1983. The facility was co-financed by the Federal Republic of Germany as part of the German domestic agreements following the transit agreement that came into force in 1972 . On February 1, 1991, the Reichsbahn stopped handling freight cars in Rummelsburg.

For the maintenance of the ICE trains starting and ending in Berlin, the ICE plant in Rummelsburg was opened at the same time as the renovation of the urban railway in 1998. Together with the factory facilities for express train wagons, the site is almost two kilometers long and around 400 meters wide. In 2002 the facility was expanded to include another five workshop tracks.

In 2012, work began on replacing the passenger car maintenance facilities. Since then, the central hall has been rebuilt and the locomotive hall and the large wagon hall have been extended. The large wagon hall from the 1980s and previously only used for the maintenance of passenger coaches was largely rebuilt, with two elevated tracks, lowered work pits and roof work platforms. After the hall was extended by 50 to 380 meters, it has also been used for the maintenance of ICE trains since December 2015 and is already prepared for the maintenance of the ICE 4 . Then three new treatment platforms were built. The pedestrian bridge between the S-Bahn station and the company premises was also replaced by a new building. The completion of the work is planned for 2018.

An expansion of the main hall of the ICE plant is also planned. It is to be extended from 210 to 450 meters. This means that ICE-2 trains in double traction and ICE-4 trains can completely fit into the hall during maintenance. A total of around 145 million euros will be invested in the modernization of the depot, of which almost 41 million euros went into converting the hangar for passenger coaches.

The hall for external cleaning was extended in 2013 so that a complete ICE 2 train can be de-iced there. Six ICE trains can be handled within 24 hours.

Since the end of 2015, train handling at the S-Bahn station has been carried out by the driver using a driver's cab monitor (ZAT-FM).

Almost 1,000 employees clean, maintain and repair up to 65 trains a day in the factory. ICE 4 trains have also been serviced here since December 2018.

Connection

The station is served by the S3 S-Bahn line.
