The Strausberg station , unofficially and for the station of the Strausberger Eisenbahn also station Strausberg Vorstadt , is located on the Prussian Eastern Railway . It is located in the southern urban area of Strausberg , is served by regional trains and the S5 line of the S-Bahn Berlin and is in tariff area C of the Berlin tariff area of the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB).

location

The train station is in a west-east direction, on flat terrain, several kilometers south of the city center in the Strausberg district of Vorstadt .

The area around the station is a traffic junction for trams, buses, Berlin S-Bahn and regional trains.

history

The section from Berlin to Küstrin of the Prussian Eastern Railway was opened in 1867, but ran several kilometers south of the city. Strausberg received a train station with a brick entrance building and two side platforms, and the suburb of suburb developed around the site .

The approximately six kilometer long connection with the city center was created by the Strausberg Railway from 1893 . Their trains began and ended at the Kleinbahnhof near the station forecourt, from where there was a track connection to the state railway. On September 20, 1896, the station of the Strausberg-Herzfelder Kleinbahn went into operation south of the state railway tracks . It had switch connections to the state railway, with which it shared the loading route, and in addition to extensive freight traffic, it also had passenger traffic until 1962. In 1967 the line from Strausberg to Herzfelde was closed.

In 1924, a covered central platform was built west of the station building, and the suburban trains from Berlin ended there on the northern track. While the existing tracks were numbered from track 1 on the house platform towards the south, the new tracks were given the numbers 9 and 8.

From the end of the Second World War to September 1945, traffic on all platform tracks was interrupted. In 1948 the line was electrified with a lateral busbar , and on October 31 of that year the station became one of the terminus of the electrically operated Berlin S-Bahn .

For military reasons, the Strausberg – Strausberg Nord railway line was opened in 1955 . It leads west of the house platform from the long-distance route and was primarily used for freight traffic. Following the trains from Berlin, passenger traffic was initially carried out with diesel multiple units from Strausberg station . In the following year, this line was also electrified, on June 3, 1956, a scheduled S-Bahn train drove for the first time from Strausberg station to Strausberg Nord .

The platform in the direction of Küstrin was abandoned in the course of the continuation of the S-Bahn, the southern suburban track was linked to the main track in the direction of Berlin. For twelve years, S-Bahn trains commuted on the new line, but changes still had to be made at Strausberg station. On May 26, 1968, a continuous train ran for the first time in regular passenger traffic from Berlin to Strausberg Nord.

Due to its proximity to the Barnim barracks and thus to the air force training companies stationed there , the station was also an important hub for the Bundeswehr . Every three months up to 900 new conscripts arrived here and then only covered the short way over the overpass of the railway to the barracks in order to start their service with the weapon. This ends with the suspension of conscription and the dissolution of the units stationed in the Barnim barracks in 2012.

At the end of the 1990s, the roofing of the S-Bahn platform was torn down and replaced by four glass waiting halls. The track connection to the Strausberger Railway has now been removed.

At the end of 2015, the S-Bahn line leading to Strausberg Nord was expanded to include a double-track encounter section. This made it possible to drive to Strausberg Nord every 20 minutes instead of every 40 minutes. Outside of rush hour, the 40-minute interval remains. The state of Brandenburg has invested 8.5 million euros in this.

The track and platform systems were extensively rebuilt in 2017 to increase the permeability of the S-Bahn and the stability of the timetable for regional trains. Around 70% of the track systems were renewed and tracks and points that were no longer needed were removed. S-Bahn and regional trains, which previously had to share track 1 on the house platform, were disentangled. For this purpose, a new platform was built for the regional railways parallel to the existing S-Bahn platform. The freight train overtaking tracks were extended by approx. 200 meters in a westerly direction.

The regional platform was designed as a combined platform for regional and suburban trains, which went into operation at the end of September 2017. The regional trains stop there on the south side (platform 2, platform height 55 cm), the north side with 96 cm high platform edge is on the existing S-Bahn platform 8. Thus, a kind of Spanish solution with boarding and alighting options was created for the S-Bahn both sides. It is now possible to change between the S-Bahn and regional trains on the same platform using ramps and stairs. The barrier-secured access to this platform is at its eastern end. As a result, the edge of the existing S-Bahn platform had to be extended by several meters in a westerly direction. The house platform on track 1, which was previously used by regional trains, was demolished east of the reception building as part of the construction work.

The converted track system finally went into operation in November 2018. Since then, the Strausberg S-Bahn station has been connected to the Strausberg electronic signal box , which previously only controlled the Hegermühle area. Until the expansion of the Halensee operations center, the operator's station is located in the building of the former B2 interlocking. In addition, the station is now equipped with the S-Bahn Berlin (ZBS) train control system.
