The Strausberg – Strausberg Nord railway line is a single-track main line in Brandenburg that is electrified with a side busbar . It branches off the main line Berlin – Kostrzyn at Strausberg station and leads to Strausberg . After the cessation of freight traffic in the 1990s, it is now only used for Berlin's S-Bahn traffic .
history
The Barracked People's Police , from which the National People's Army emerged from 1956 , had moved their headquarters from Berlin-Adlershof to Strausberg in June 1954 , as Berlin had been declared a demilitarized zone due to its four-power status. Since the headquarters were in the north of the city, but the nearest train station was far away, it was necessary to build a branch line. The Strausberg Railway was also unable to establish the transport connection, as its route did not extend to the barracks and the travel time would have been too long if it had been extended by the required 4 km. After a short construction period, the S-Bahn line was opened to traffic on January 1, 1955. Behind the main platform of the Strausberg train station, the train pulled out of the Ostbahn and led northwards in a slightly curved shape. In addition to the Strausberg Nord terminus, a Strausberg Stadt stop was built around seven kilometers behind the start of the line, as well as a siding to the barracks of the Hugo Eberlein guard regiment at the terminus. Diesel multiple units were initially used , which were replaced by electric S-Bahn trains from June 3, 1956. However, the complicated track layout at Strausberg train station and the unfavorable location of the house platform initially prevented continuous operation, so that the trains between Strausberg and Strausberg Nord initially operated irregularly.
Only after a continuous track connection had been established could continuous operation be started on May 26, 1968. Since there was only one continuous track available in Strausberg and the next passing point was in Strausberg Nord, it was only possible to run at 40-minute intervals.
A stop at Hegermühle was set up on October 5, 1984, about halfway between Strausberg, both to improve the development of the area between the suburbs and the center - especially the “Hegermühle” development area that was created during this period - and for excursion traffic to the nearby Herrensee and Strausberg City.
After the fall of the Wall there were a few voices calling for the line to be closed and the Strausberg Railway to be expanded at the same time . However, studies have shown that the number of passengers would only increase from 10,500 to 11,700 instead of the targeted 14,200. As a further means of increasing the number of passengers, individual trains of the regional train line RB26 were used during the rush hour between Berlin-Lichtenberg and Strausberg Nord during the 1998/99 timetable period . However, since only just under 200 passengers used this connection a day, the offer was withdrawn in 1999.
On July 20, 2009, S-Bahn operations were temporarily suspended on the entire Strausberg – Strausberg Nord route, as wheel inspections were being carried out on three-quarters of the S-Bahn trains. The stations Hegermühle, Strausberg Stadt and Strausberg Nord could not be served due to a lack of vehicles. On August 31, 2009, operations on the line were resumed, and on September 8, 2009 there were again train failures due to technical defects in the brakes. Since too few trains were operational anyway, all operations were also stopped this time. From November 16, 2009, the route was used again by the S-Bahn.
Around the year 2000 the journey times of the S-Bahn from Berlin Alexanderplatz to Strausberg could be reduced by almost five minutes by modernizing the vehicle fleet. The number of passengers on the route to Strausberg Nord also rose, between 1998 and 2002 alone by 24 percent. This in turn led to calls for the line to be compressed to 20 minutes, which, however, made it necessary to build a second track near the Hegermühle stop. Although the state of Brandenburg ordered the 20-minute cycle several years ago, Deutsche Bahn only started planning the route expansion after the state assumed the planning costs of 450,000 euros in mid-2012. The planning should be carried out by 2014. The plan was to double-track an approximately 2.2-kilometer section between Strausberg and Hegermühle. Around seven million euros have been budgeted for this.
The actual construction work for the construction of the 2.2 kilometer long encounter section took place in the course of an eight-week full closure until the end of September 2015. Before it was commissioned, the bridge over Garzauer Strasse had to be expanded and a 187 meter long soundproof wall had to be erected south of it. The meeting section was put into operation and the 20-minute cycle to Strausberg Nord was started when the timetable changed on December 13, 2015.
While the Strausberg and Strausberg Nord stations were or are initially still equipped with DR security technology and Hl signals , the new transfer point at the Hegermühle stop is controlled from an ESTW operator station in the Strausberg signal box; the southern end of the double-track section was part of the security technology Strausberg train station. As a community route train and remote web (freight) the track is both mechanical traction lock as well as point-shaped train control , which provides, with additional control center Hegermühle ZBS -Balisen. On November 19, 2018, the new ESTW-A Strausberg went into operation, the range extends from Strausberg to Hegermühle. In the encounter section to Hegermühle, track changing operations are now possible.
A renovation of the Strausberg station with the construction of separate platforms for S-Bahn and regional traffic is planned for 2016/2017.

Hegermühle
The Hegermühle stop was opened on October 5, 1984 in order to better serve newly built settlements in the south of the city of Strausberg. The name of the stop is derived from one of the wind and water mills that were built around Strausberg in the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as the station of the same name and the Schlagmühle stop of the Strausberg Railway .
The trains on the route were originally supposed to be processed by video surveillance from the Strausberg Stadt stop, but this was not possible due to technical defects. A mobile supervisor therefore drove with every train between Strausberg Nord and Strausberg. In the years 1989 to 1991, a service building for train protection systems was built at Hegermühle station, also to prevent vandalism . Since then there have been no more mobile supervision on the route.
Strausberg city
The Strausberg Stadt stop has existed since the line opened. The station has a track on an uncovered side platform that is barrier-free at ground level. Originally, instead of the side platform, a central platform was planned between two tracks. However, this was not implemented as the planned double-track line was not implemented.
A small, low-rise building serves as the reception building. The city intends to acquire the station building for around 25,000 euros in order to then redesign the area and the connection to the historic old town.
At the beginning of 2019, the station received an additional entrance at the southern end of the platform. This was financed as part of the redesign of the area around the station with funds from urban development funding.
The redesign of the forecourt was largely completed in early 2020. A new bus loop makes it possible to stop the bus lines directly at the station building, thus making it easier to change to the S-Bahn. The crossing was equipped with a guidance system for the blind.

Strausberg Nord station is the end of the line.
