The Berlin Greifswalder Straße station is a station of the Berlin S-Bahn in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg in the Pankow district . It is a station on the Ringbahn . It is named after Greifswalder Straße , which runs at right angles to the tracks .

history

The station was opened in 1875 as part of the construction of the Ringbahn, initially under the name Weißensee . The name referred to the town of Weißensee, which at that time was still outside the Berlin urban area . However, the entire area was not in the Weißensee area. The station was initially to the west of Greifswalder Straße, but was moved to the east side in 1889/1890, where it has remained until today.

Electric on-site operation for passenger traffic began here on February 1, 1929; From December 1st, the railway company was called "S-Bahn". On October 1, 1946, the station was renamed Greifswalder Straße , the name was now more appropriate for the location.

The tracks were also used for inner-city freight traffic. This was discontinued with the shutdown of the gasworks and the shunting track system was eliminated. What remained was an area of ​​28,000  , which was turned into fallow .

In the 1980s, a prefabricated housing estate was built southwest of the station on parts of the former Greifswalder Strasse gasworks . In connection with the new construction of the apartments, the station was fundamentally modernized and a direct transition between tram and S-Bahn was established. After the work was completed on April 15, 1986, both the housing estate and the S-Bahn station were given the name Ernst-Thälmann-Park .

After German reunification , the station was renamed Greifswalder Strasse on May 23, 1993 , and the housing estate continues to bear the name Ernst-Thälmann Park .

At the beginning of 2007, S-Bahn-Berlin GmbH modernized the entrance area of ​​the station with a snack bar and a newspaper shop.

The approximately 29,000 m² area of ​​the former freight station and the associated structures were advertised for sale on the Internet by DB AG in 2010. In 2011 and 2012 the company Bahngelände Greifswalder Straße GmbH acquired the area. The district waived its right of first refusal . The new owner planned here with the district in numerous discussions with all parties involved (city planning office, education authority, senate , monument protection authority, traffic planning office, etc.) until 2015 according to an expensive INSEK procedure (around 100,000 euros in tax money) on this property and on the approximately 10,000 m² large property of the Senate (currently parking spaces) the construction of 600 apartments together with the state-owned housing association Gewobag . Everyone involved and those in charge of the district office and the Senate agreed that the parking lots and the concreted fallow area on the railway line would be an ideal location for a closed, green development with many balconies and high gardens with quiet living rooms facing south and a new park to be created Housing would be. But also a school as part of the school expansion and a daycare center should be built on part of the property. The investor, the district, all parties and the Senate agreed. Criticism came from the residents' initiative, who had the entire property along the railway as a park and would rather have another new green area - in addition to their approx. 200,000 m² park. The development of the parking lots, which should be preserved in any case, was also criticized. After the 2016 election, the planning process was suspended because the party Die Linke blocked the project in the Housing Committee and no longer wanted to keep the appointment. The left won this constituency with just under 30% of the vote. The second strongest force was the AfD . Since its establishment in 1986, this constituency has been the communist stronghold and the main constituency of the SED , PDS and the Left. In 2015, the investor filed a lawsuit with the Berlin Administrative Court. The investor spoke of a breach of his word and claimed that he had information that, in principle, housing in the constituency would be prevented in order to secure this constituency as a traditional constituency as a stronghold for the left. Senator Katrin Lompscher (Die Linke) announced that she did not want to interfere in the internal affairs of the district.

According to the Senate Building Department “no residential development is permitted under current planning law [as of May 2018]. But all those affected are [now] talking to one another ”. In November 2018, the date for the 2015 complaint took place before the 13th Chamber of the Administrative Court. The judge ruled that the complaint was rejected due to formal errors in the building application, but that basic development according to Section 34 was permissible. The district then announced in April 2019 that it wanted to submit an application to draw up a development plan for the property as a green space and as a school location. This project, which was initiated by the left, is met with massive criticism from the population and other parties, especially since urgently needed living space for around 2000 people is prevented and the investor has possible claims for damages in the tens of millions.
