history

The station was opened in 1869 as part of the connection from Cottbus via Senftenberg and Grossenhain to Dresden. The first station building was built during this time. In 1874 the second Lübbenau – Kamenz line was opened by the Berlin-Görlitzer Railway Company . They built a second station building for this purpose. In 1906 the line to Schipkau (then spelling Zschipkau ) went into operation, where there was a connection to Finsterwalde.

The current station building is dated to the years 1914/16. The platform tunnel and the goods shed also date from this time. As a result of the expansion for the transport of lignite from the surrounding lignite mining areas and the double-track route, the station building was rebuilt and expanded several times, the last time in 1927 in connection with the raising of the tracks.

In November 1987 the line electrification reached Senftenberg. During this time there was also a major redesign of the track systems in connection with the brown coal opencast mines. The route to Lübbenau (now separated since then only in Sedlitz East Station part of the station Senftenberg) of the route to Cottbus. Since 1990, all lines starting from Senftenberg have been operated electrically. The station building and the bus station in front of it were renovated and expanded after 1990.

After that, the building was gradually stripped of its range of services. Ticket issuance and rail service offers were closed and replaced by machines. The last shop, a hairdresser, was closed in April 2016.

In the building there is also a mural above the entrance that represents the city of Senftenberg. The basis is the cityscape from the 1970s.

The station is a listed building.
