The Schipkau – Senftenberg railway was a branch line in Niederlausitz .

history

The line was opened on October 1, 1905. It belonged to the Prussian State Railways , but was operated by the Zschipkau-Finsterwalder Railway Company (ZFE). With the connection between Zschipkau and Senftenberg and the ZFE's main line from Finsterwalde to Zschipkau , which had existed since 1885, a continuous connection from Finsterwalde to Senftenberg was created.

On July 1, 1943, the ZFE was nationalized and subordinated to the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft . After the Second World War there was a high volume of goods traffic due to the growing mining industry.

Passenger traffic in the post-war years was carried out by the Deutsche Reichsbahn . This was discontinued on May 22, 1966. The line was used by the mine and works railways of the BKK Senftenberg and the later LAUBAG until the beginning of the 1990s . In the 1990s the line was dismantled. Today you can find a cycle path on the old Gleisdamm, which is part of the so-called Lusatian mining tour .

particularities

The last of three death transports from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp , the Lost Train , stopped at Schipkau station on its wandering through the front lines on April 19 and 20, 1945. During the stay 51 people died as a result of malnutrition and diseases. The SS buried the bodies in three mass graves not far from the train station.

Accidents

On the morning of September 10, 1964 around 5.15 a.m., a serious accident occurred on the route. At the level crossing near the junction to the progres s briquette factory (before 1945 Viktoria), the fully occupied shift bus on the Sallgast – Klettwitz – Schipkau – Ruhland – Bf.Fortstieg – Brieske line hit a closed barrier and collided with a freight train from Senftenberg. The bus was dragged along about 60 meters. Four occupants were killed and 19 others were seriously injured in the accident.
