Hörlitz ( Sorbian : Wórlica , Senftenberg-West from 1974 to 1990 ) is a place in the southern Brandenburg district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz and part of the municipality of Schipkau . It is located west of the city of Senftenberg in Niederlausitz . Hörlitz was partially devastated in the course of lignite mining .

history

Middle Ages and Early Modern Times

Hörlitz was first mentioned in a document in 1447. The place name is derived from the Sorbian word "hodlaŕ" for "eagle". Agriculture and pond farming as well as viticulture in the Hörlitzer Flur, a mountain range north of the Black Elster glacial valley, formed during the Ice Age , were the main source of income for the predominantly Sorbian residents. Hörlitz belonged to the Saxon office of Senftenberg, the residents were forced to eat at the office mill in Senftenberg.

During the Seven Years' War in 1756, Friedrich II moved into quarters in Hörlitz.

Devastation

In 1867, the first lignite mine was put into operation near Senftenberg . As a result, further opencast mines and briquette factories were built near the village.

From 1935 the old town of Hörlitz was dredged over by the Marga opencast mine of Ilse Bergbau AG coming from Brieske . 500 residents were relocated. A new settlement had already been built in the Hörlitzer Flur near the briquette factories "Meurostolln" and "Senftenberger Stadtgrube". This scattered settlement grew through resettlement from the old Hörlitz and thus became today's place Hörlitz (formerly Paradise ). From 1958 onwards there was another resettlement of the residents. The opening of the new Meuro opencast mine began right on the edge of the village. 400 residents had to be relocated.

On January 1, 1974, Hörlitz was incorporated into Senftenberg. The spin-off from Senftenberg took place on May 6, 1990. On December 31, 2001, Hörlitz merged with the towns of Annahütte , Meuro , Schipkau , Drochow and Klettwitz to form the new municipality of Schipkau.

This is where the entrance gate to the tunnel at that time is located, as well as the 33.5 meter high Hörlitz observation tower built in 2004 . The viewing platform at a height of 27 meters provides a view over the area of the former Meuro opencast mine, over the neighboring Eurospeedway Lausitz, and partly as far as the Saxon mountainous region.

The entrance to the Meurostolln , like the two churches, the Heilandskirche and the St. Barbara Church, are among the architectural monuments in the community of Schipkau . Since July 10, 2007, a stumbling block has been in memory of Otto Müller in Otto-Müller-Straße .
