List of abandoned locations in the Lausitz coal area
The list of abandoned places in the Lusatian coal district includes both partially and completely devastated places, districts and colonies in the Upper and Lower Lusatia in the Lusatian lignite district and Upper Lusatian mining district .
The demolition of places began in 1924 with New Laubusch , an expansion of the later also devastated town Laubusch , for opencast mining Erika by Ilse Bergbau AG . Many of the places were in the original Sorbian core settlement area .
In the Lausitz area, over 80 towns and parts of the community have been demolished either by open-cast lignite mining or by cooling water reservoirs for power plants, and over 30 have been partially devastated. According to the plans of the LEAG predecessor Vattenfall, in addition to the places mentioned in the list, Atterwasch , Grabko and Kerkwitz were to be destroyed by the Jänschwalde opencast mine, Rohne , Mühlrose and Mulkwitz by the Nochten and Proschim opencast mine by the Welzow-Süd opencast mine by 2042 . On March 30, 2017, however , the LEAG announced that it would not expand Jänschwalde and Nochten, so that at least Atterwasch, Grabko, Kerkwitz, Rohne and Mulkwitz can be retained. Most of the residents insist on the resettlement of the town of Mühlrose, which is surrounded by the opencast mine, the open pit apron and the already renatured post-mining landscape .
Opencast mines
The following large open-cast mines, which were used to demolish places, were opened up and some are still in operation today:
- Bärwalde opencast mine (1971–1993), east of Hoyerswerda
- Cottbus-Nord opencast mine (1974–2015), east of Cottbus
- Gräbendorf opencast mine (1979–1992), west of Drebkau

- Werminghoff I opencast mine (1914–1944), east of Hoyerswerda
- Werminghoff II opencast mine / Glückauf II opencast mine (1934–1960), east of Hoyerswerda
- Werminghoff III opencast mine / Glückauf III opencast mine, Lohsa opencast mine since 1968 (1944–1980), east of Hoyerswerda
After the carbonization, the open-cast mines were filled in or are converted into lakes by flooding. The majority of these lakes, some of which are connected by canals, form the emerging Lusatian Lake District . The lakes and canals are often named after devastated places, such as the Partwitzer See and Sorno Canal . In the area around Nochten, a boulder park was created on the recultivated area.
Notes on the information in the tables
The name of the place that was excavated is listed in the Name column, the Sorbian place name in the Sorbian column . If there is no Sorbian place name, a - is used. Since the geographical coordinates of the devastated locations are difficult to determine, the closest city and, in relation to it, the direction of the compass is given in the Location column . In the year column , the year of the demolition is given, in the resettlers column the number of registered resettlers, in the open pit column the opencast mine or the storage basin through which the demolition occurred. These columns are sortable.
The Remarks column cannot be sorted; here, among other things, incorporations or brief information about the location are listed.
The number of registered resettlers belies the fact that many residents were resettled when the planned demolition became known and are not recorded.
