history
The street village of Koßwig was first mentioned in a document in 1312. The name is derived from the Old Sorbian Kosovik , which means place where blackbirds occur . The Lower Sorbian word for blackbird is Kos . In 1420 the place was called Koswig and in 1517 as Koßwigk . The Sorbian name variants Koßojze and Kosojce were mentioned in 1761 and 1843. In the Lower Sorbian place name variant , the Old Sorbian ending -ovik has been changed based on other place names -ojce . The place belonged to the parish Vetschau.
After the Congress of Vienna , Koßwig and the entire Lower Lusatia came to the Kingdom of Prussia and belonged to the Calau district . After the Second World War, Koßwig belonged to the Calau district, which was newly founded in 1952 . The neighboring town of Dubrau was incorporated on October 1, 1966, Dubrau was to be devastated by the Seese-Ost open- cast lignite mine and the inhabitants had already been resettled. Dubrau was revived when it turned away from lignite mining. Koßwig belongs to the parish of Niederlausitz . On October 26, 2003 the village was incorporated into Vetschau / Spreewald with the places Missen , Lassow and Raddusch .
