history

Buschmühle Raddusch

The Niederlausitzer place was first mentioned in 1294 as Raddets or Raddiß . In 1312 the spelling was changed to Radisch , 1460 to Rads , 1542 Radiß , 1700 to Radusch and 1727 to the current one. The Lower Sorbian form of the name was called Raduš in 1843 . The place name is derived from a Slavic personal name with the stem Rad- . The settlement history is much older, which can be proven in the more than 1000 year old Slavic castle Raddusch .

Raddusch was and is still partially inhabited by the Wends ( Sorbs ), a West Slavic people with their own culture, language and tradition. In 1884, Arnošt Muka determined a total of 869 inhabitants, including 854 Sorbs and only 15 Germans, for his population statistics for Lusatia. Due to the increased assimilation of the Sorbian-speaking inhabitants in the first half of the 20th century , the proportion of the Sorbian / Wendish population had fallen to 22.1% by 1956, which means that Raddusch in the area between Vetschau and Lübbenau is still part of those villages with the highest proportion of Sorbian speakers. The number of speakers has continued to decrease up to the present. However, the women's Spreewald costumes are still particularly striking . Street names and signs are often bilingual. Several mills were in operation for centuries, including the Radduscher Buschmühle .

The place name could be derived from the Slavic personal name Radoslaw (in German: love of fame or from "be happy" - glad place), since Raddusch used to be a rich farming village. The sources of income included agriculture and fishing. Cucumbers, horseradish, onions, pumpkins, as well as tobacco and flax were grown . The boat was an important means of transport in Raddusch for a long time. It was of particular importance in agriculture, because the fodder often had to be brought from far away meadows to the village stables. This work was mostly done by the women. With the barge and vegetables, cereals and potatoes were up by Berlin punted . These trips took about a week and were very strenuous.

Today tourism is an important economic factor. Thousands of guests visit the Spreewald every year and also spend the night in Raddusch's hotels and guest houses. On extended boat trips, often in combination with the Spreewald kremser and the carriage, the guests experience the cultural landscape of the UNESCO- protected biosphere reserve. Raddusch is connected to the Spreewald waterway network via the Radduscher Kahnfahrt .

In terms of infrastructure, Raddusch is one of the best developed Spreewald locations. It is only a five-minute walk from the train station to the port, and around five kilometers from the Vetschau and Boblitz motorway exits on the federal motorway 15 .

Companies have settled in the industrial area, such as the Spreewald vegetable market and a fish smokehouse. This is also the seat of the Spreewald Tourist Association. The Radduscher Heimatstube gives a good insight into the village life of Wendish and German families.

Buildings

The Radduscher Buschmühle with the old lock and weir system 37 and the residential building with the community room at Dorfplatz 4 are registered as architectural monuments .
