Spreewald costume

Spreewaldtracht ( Raddusch )

The Spreewald costume is the variant of the traditional Sorbian costume found in the Spreewald . The ethnically neutral term related to the region of origin only caught on in the National Socialist era. Previously, the costume was usually simply referred to as " Wendish costume".

distribution

It is not only related to the Spreewald , but is often worn there on festive occasions, mostly as part of tourist festivals, and is therefore called "Spreewald costume". For the Spreewald region, the term "Wendish costume" would be more appropriate, since the descendants of the Slavic tribe of the Lusizi who live there prefer the Wenden term for themselves. Each village or parish has its own special shapes that tell the initiate where the bearer comes from and what marital status she has. The traditional costume is no longer worn in everyday life. The local history museum in the Dissen-Striesower district of Dissen shows 15 different complete Spreewald costumes.

nature

The costume also differs according to the occasion and location: There is the Sunday costume (also going out and festival costume), the church attire costume (mostly black and white) and the work costume made of blue printed materials. Components are

  • Hood , usually an artistically embroidered headscarf that is worn like a hood.
  • Tank skirt made of heavy velvet in large pleats. The inner lining of the skirt is made of linen and it is finished with a wide embroidered band at the bottom.
  • The skirt is partially hidden at the front by an apron with an embroidery pattern or crochet .
  • The top of the costume is made up of the velvet vest together with an embroidered shawl.

Hip bands with large bows at the back (also tied to the front depending on the location) and several petticoats give the wearer a full body shape.
