Weißagk ( Lower Sorbian Wusoka ) was a place in Lusatia . The Angerdorf was in a valley on the northern edge of the Weißagker Platte, 7 km west-northwest of Forst . It consisted of the districts of Niedergut and Obergut.

The size of Weißagk fluctuated between around 503 (1875) and 698 (1946) inhabitants. In the 1970s the village had 540 inhabitants. In 1985 Weißagk was excavated for the Jänschwalde opencast mine after the remaining 321 inhabitants had been relocated.

In December 2005, the Weißagk Heimatpark was opened on the road from Mulknitz to Gosda as a memorial site .

history

In 1344 the village is first mentioned as a vassal village. The name "Wyschok", derived from the Sorbian wusoko / wysoko for "high (situated)", appears in 1389. The place name changed over several stages to Weissagk (1504). In 1937 Weissagk is renamed to Weißagk. From 1344 to 1823 it was a fief of the Lords of Bomsdorff . In 1830 serfdom was abolished in Weißagk. From 1856 to 1945 the landlords were from the von Treskow family .

In November 1945, as part of the land reform, 593 hectares of manor land were divided up between poor farmers and emigrants. In October 1946, the local people elected their first community council. In April 1956 a seasonal day nursery opened in the village and in 1960 a pharmacy was built. The last service took place on December 24, 1985 in the church in Weißagk. The church was demolished in 1987.

Population and language

The scientist Arnošt Muka counted 632 inhabitants in Weißagk in the 1880s, of which around 500 were Sorbs (79%). The service in the Sorbian language stopped in 1865 with the death of Pastor Bětkar. Sorbian had not been taught in the Weißagker school since 1827. According to Ernst Tschernik , there were only 20 residents with Sorbian language skills in the municipality of Weißagk in 1956, which was just under 3 percent of the population.
