The Sorno Canal (Überleiter 10) is an artificial navigable waterway in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in southern Brandenburg . The canal is located near Kleinkoschen , a district of the city of Senftenberg . In the Lusatian Lakeland, it connects the two lakes created from former lignite opencast mines , the Geierswalder See and the Sedlitzer See . The 1250 meter long canal runs from the north bank of the Geierswalder to the south-eastern bank of the Sedlitz lake. The channel name is reminiscent of the in 1971 by the open pit Sedlitz devastated place Sorno . The former Sedlitz opencast mine is currently being flooded, from which the Sedlitz Lake will be created.

The first groundbreaking was on September 14, 2004, and the canal was inaugurated on January 5, 2006.

purpose

In addition to its tourist function, the canal regulates the water balance in the region. Overall, the water balance is to be restored and the drainage conditions from the remaining chain of holes in the post-mining region to the Schwarze Elster and Rainitza receiving waters secured. The lakes can be flooded easier and faster thanks to the canal's structure; flooding with rising groundwater would have taken several decades. This means that shaft erosion only occurs to a small extent.

There is a double gate weir on the canal. At this point it is crossed by a cycle path, a former farm road of the Lausitzer and Mitteldeutsche Bergbau-Verwaltungsgesellschaft (LMBV).

The bottom width of the canal is four meters and the water capacity is five cubic meters per second. The bridge is 29.7 meters long and has a clearance of six meters.

The work was carried out on behalf of the LMBV. The costs for the Sorno Canal, together with the construction of the Rosendorfer Canal , which connects the Sedlitz and Partwitz lakes , amounted to around four million euros.

Some of the 162 steps in the tower

At the confluence with Lake Sedlitz, the 30-meter-high Lausitzer Seenland landmark , the so-called Rostige Nagel ( Lage ), was built. This is a lookout tower made of 111 tons of Corten steel , with the base of a right-angled triangle with cathetus lengths of about twelve and eight meters. 162 steps lead to the viewing platform on the tower. From the viewing platform, in addition to the connected lakes, you can see the Großräschener See , which is emerging from the former Meuro opencast mine , the wind farm in Klettwitz and the Schwarze Pump and Boxberg power plants . On October 23, 2008, the tower was released after 70 days of construction. The name arose because the tower is covered with a red-brown patina due to the material used , which will increase over time. This is supposed to give the tower an appearance of open-cast mining machines. The cost was almost a million euros. The tower was inaugurated in the theme year "Seensucht Lausitz" of the international building exhibition Fürst-Pückler-Land . The design comes from the Munich architect Stefan Giers and was awarded the special prize of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Development in the course of the award of the German Steel Construction Prize 2010 .

Because of the complete lack of accessibility, although this is clearly required by law, the tower was awarded the negative “ concrete head ” award in 2009.
