The Partwitzer See , Parcowski jězor in Upper Sorbian , northwest of Hoyerswerda is one of the largest artificial lakes in the Free State of Saxony . The north-western part is in Brandenburg . It was created as a post-mining landscape from a residual open pit and, with a storage volume of 134 million cubic meters of water and a depth of up to 41 meters, covers an area of 1,102 hectares.

Tourism concept

The Partwitzer See was created between 2004 and 2015 when the former Scado opencast mine was flooded with the water of the Black Elster . The village of Scado was devastated in the 1960s for the neighboring Koschen open-cast mine . As a post-mining landscape , the Partwitzer See is to become a tourist hub in the artificially created Lusatian lake district according to regional planning .

The water divides the 2.5 kilometer long Scado peninsula into a north and a south basin. For security reasons, the peninsula is closed and cannot be entered. The lake is to be connected with the Geierswalder See , the Sedlitzer See , the Blunoer Südsee and the Neuwieser See by navigable canals . There is already a connection to Lake Geierswalder via the Barbara Canal and to Lake Sedlitz via the Rosendorfer Canal .

On the east bank near Klein Partwitz there is a campsite and a riding stables with a restaurant. Carriage and be in activities Kremserfahrten , boat and ATV tours offered. A sailing club as well as jet ski and boat rental have settled here. A port is being planned. There is a textile beach southeast of the Scado peninsula . There are no sanitary facilities. The beach is unguarded.

The Partwitzer See is still subordinate to the Lausitzer und Mitteldeutsche Bergbau-Verwaltungsgesellschaft (LMBV). In some cases, it is forbidden to step on the banks, as there is still a risk of landslides in places at the edge . Corresponding signs indicating the restricted areas must be observed.

As with every open pit lake, the Partwitzer See resembles an acidic volcanic lake in terms of its water chemistry. Without regular treatment, the water in Lake Partwitz would have a pH value of less than 2.8 and thus be as acidic as vinegar. To counter this situation, a specially built water treatment ship was put into operation in 2016, which continuously fertilizes the lake with lime. This is supposed to lower the acidity. The boat has a special coating that protects against acid. It goes out onto the lake up to eleven times a day and distributes 25 tons of lime with each trip. The neutralization must be continued permanently. According to the pyrite weathering set in motion by the previous open-cast mine and its transport via the groundwater path , the Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture expects this re-acidification potential to have an impact on the lake water quality for the next 100 to 200 years.

According to the EU Bathing Water Directive, bathing requires a pH value greater than 6. The Lausitzer Seenland eV tourism association provides regular information on the current acidity of the lake on its website. According to this information, the pH value in April 2019 was 7.3.
