The Geierswalder See , in Upper Sorbian Lejnjanski jězor , is an artificial lake. Most of it is in the Free State of Saxony, northwest of Hoyerswerda, and partly in Brandenburg . The places Geierswalde and Kleinkoschen , a district of Senftenberg, are located directly on the lake . It is the first lake in the future Lusatian chain of lakes that can be used for tourism , after Lake Senftenberg , which flooded in the 1970s . For him, the remaining hole in the Koschen opencast mine was flooded with water from the Black Elster . The last renovation work ended in 2004. In 2006 the lake was released. The water content of the lake is 92 million cubic meters.

Renovation work

Lock Koschen between Geierswalder and Senftenberger See

The Koschen opencast mine was only operated until 1972/1973, but the banks of the future lake still have to be designed and its water quality improved. The water in this lake is acidic, with a pH of around 3.8. The Geierswalder See will one day have a water surface of 620 hectares; the Geierswalder Ufer will be given a beach 2.7 kilometers in length.

The Geierswalder See still belongs to the LMBV . The bank is steeply sloping. Surfing, swimming and motor water sports are permitted at Geierswalder See during the season (May to September).

The lake is on the artificially created Sornoer channel with the Lake Sedlitz connected. It has been connected to Lake Senftenberg since 2013 by the Koschen Canal (formerly Überleiter 12 ). It is about a kilometer long canal, which is partly designed as a ship tunnel under the federal highway 96 and the Black Elster. In addition, a lock was built to bridge the one to two meter difference in height between the lakes.

Lusatian Lakeland

Floating houses

Over the next few years, the transformation of 12 former opencast mines in Brandenburg and Saxony into a water and leisure area will create the Lusatian Lake District and Europe's largest artificial water landscape with nine lakes and a total water area of around 7,000 to 8,300 hectares. Of this, 6500 hectares will be connected by navigable canals (such as the Sorno Canal ) and will also be navigable for larger passenger ships. The more than one kilometer long waterway ( Barbara Canal ) between Lake Geierswalder and Lake Partwitz (formerly the Skado opencast mine) will only be usable for tourism in a few years, once the lakes have been flooded. The flooding of the open pit lakes is currently around 75% (as of April 2011).

Tourist development concept

Specifically, the planning of the Geierswalder See water and adventure world is increasingly taking shape. There are four areas in the "Geierswalde Leisure and Water World Tourism Development Concept":

  • Sports boat harbor / water hike base with 60 (later 300) berths and a "marina of floating houses"
  • Center with sun terraces, wind peak and a multifunctional pier
  • Adventure world "dune"
  • Koschendamm beach area with a water ski facility (east bank) and a campsite

A 30 meter high landmark was built on the Sorno Canal , the so-called Rusty Nail . It is a lookout tower made of Corten steel . The tower was released on October 23, 2008. It got its name from the red-brown coating of patina , which is said to increase over time. This is supposed to give the tower an appearance of open-cast mining machines. The cost was almost a million euros. The tower was inaugurated in the theme year "Seensucht Lausitz" of the international building exhibition Fürst-Pückler-Land . Because of the complete lack of accessibility, although this is clearly required by law, the tower was awarded the negative “ concrete head ” award in 2009.

The 23 individual projects were completed between 2002 and 2009.
