The history of the Großräschener See: The mining sequence of the Meuro opencast mine / later Großräschener See

The lake was created from the flooding of the remaining hole in the Meuro opencast mine .

It is located south of the city of Großräschen and west of the Senftenberg district of Sedlitz and can be reached via the A 13 (Dresden – Berlin) and federal road 96 or via the Sedlitz community train station.

The lake, which began flooding on March 15, 2007, is one of the larger in the region. A harbor basin with a pier and accommodation facilities as well as a pier was built in Großräschen for tourist development . The port was inaugurated on May 11, 2019. Due to the 2018 drought, the target water level was 100 m above sea level. NHN was not reached when the port opened, so that the lake may initially only be navigated with a special permit. General approval is not expected until 2020.

From the second half of 2010 onwards, a 1197 meter long canal ( Ilse Canal ) for smaller ships was built between the Großräschener See and the Sedlitzer See . The construction of the building was completed in autumn 2014. It crosses under the four tracks of the Senftenberg – Cottbus railway line and federal highway 169 in a 186 meter long tunnel. When the water level in the lakes has reached its final level, it will be three and a half meters high. In 2018 it was about 1 meter below the target level.

In September 2011 the lake was renamed from Ilsesee to Großräschener See.
