Fop Smit

Fop Smit (born October 11, 1777 in Alblasserdam , † August 25, 1866 in Nieuw-Lekkerland ) was a Dutch shipowner and shipbuilding entrepreneur. He was the founder of the company Smit Internationale , which started its service in 1842 with a steam tug. The company currently has a turnover of 470.3 million euros (2006).

In 1838 Fop Smit from Kinderdijk built his first ship for service in the Dutch East Indies . Four years later he built a steam tug to carry out the towing service between Helvoet, Brouwershaven, Dordrecht and the North Sea on behalf of some shipowners and insurers.

The company focused more and more on the towing service and built a large number of tugs over the years. 1900 International Sleep Service is established.

In 1847 the Brigantine Industrie was built at Fop Smit in Kinderdijk on behalf of the shipowner Willem Ruys . It was the first iron sailing ship to be built in the Netherlands.

In 1853 Fop Smit built the first iron clipper, the California , a 663 ton ship for the Louis Bienfait & Zn shipping company. On the first voyage, Captain Jaski drove from Duins to Port Adelaide in 86 days. Other well-known clippers were the Kosmopoliet II (built 1862) and the Noach I to VI . The Noach I sailed from Anjer through the Sunda Strait to The Lizard in the English Channel in 65 days.

Smit married Jannigje Pieterse Mak on June 29, 1806 in Alblasserdam. He was the son of Jan Foppe Smit and Marijge Ceele. The grave of the Smit family is in Lekdijk near Nieuw-Lekkerland.
