Smit Internationale NV is a long-standing Dutch company that has achieved international renown for its activities in the field of tug services, salvage of shipwrecks and, above all, for its work after ship accidents. The management of port terminals for external companies is also carried out.
history
The company was founded in 1842 by Fop Smit ; Over the years it specialized more and more in tug services and built many tugs . At the beginning of the 20th century, the company faced competition from L. Smit & Co .; however, the two companies merged in 1923 to become Smit Internationale . Over time, maritime rescue operations also became part of the company's profile. In 1957 Smit removed 41 shipwrecks from the Suez Canal .
Smit has been part of the Royal Boskalis Westminster group of companies since 2010 .
Group structure
Smit consists of four parts of the group:
- Smit Harbor Towage , port and tug service from Smit
- Smit Terminals , a full package from tug service to port terminal management
- Smit Salvage (formerly Smit-Tak), environmental protection, shipwreck and recovery service
- Smit Transport & Heavy Lift , logistics service for heavy goods

- Smitwijs , joint venture with, among others, Wijsmuller for deep-sea tugs
- Smit Lloyd , supply of offshore plants

- Saam Smit Towage , Towing America

Smit Internationale carried out the following salvage projects, among others:
- the tanker Betelgeuse in Ireland, broken into 3 parts (1979/1980)
- the Herald of Free Enterprise (1987)
- the Russian nuclear submarine K-141 Kursk (2000)
- the Ehime Maru (2001)
- the prestige (2001)
- the Jolly Rubino (2002) off South Africa (chemicals as cargo; 500 t heavy fuel oil; fire on board; abandoned aground; towing, emptying; demolition to form an artificial reef)
- the tricolor (2002)
- the Mighty Servant 3 (2006)
- the MSC Napoli (2007)
- the AND Adriatic (2008)
- the Lisco Gloria (2010)
- the Nordlys (2011)
- partly the Costa Concordia by emptying the fuel tanks (2012)
- the Modern Express off the French coast (2016) (towing the tipped RoRo ferry into a port and erecting it using the ship's tanks)
