The Nordlys ( Norwegian for " Northern Lights " ) is a passenger and ro-ro ship operated by the Hurtigruten ASA shipping company and is used on scheduled services on the Hurtigruten on the coast of Norway .

history

Construction and commissioning

The Nordlys was laid down at Volkswerft GmbH in Stralsund with hull number 102 at the beginning of 1993 as the sister ship of the previously built Kong Harald for the Norwegian shipping company Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap A / S (TFDS) . The ship was on 13 August 1993 by the stack and was from the March 22, 1994 Norwegian politician Kolle Grondahl Kirsti in Oslo baptized. She is already the second ship of the shipping company to bear this name. The name predecessor was built at the Danish Ålborg shipyard and commissioned in 1951. She was in service on the Hurtigruten until 1983, after which she changed owners several times and sank on May 31, 1988 northwest of Texel .

commitment

After commissioning, the Nordlys ran out on a short cruise, which led to Stavanger , Newcastle and London , among others . On April 4, 1994, she officially began regular service on the Hurtigruten between Bergen and Kirkenes .

When the shipping company TFDS got into financial difficulties, the Nordlys was transferred to Kirberg Shipping KS in June 2003. However, TFDS was granted a buyback right after 10 and 15 years. As part of the merger of Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap A / S (TFDS) and Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskap A / S (OVDS) in March 2006, the shipping company Hurtigruten ASA took over the operation of the ship.

Due to renewed financial problems and low utilization of the ships in the winter half-year, the Nordlys was briefly launched in Åndalsnes at the beginning of the 2008/09 winter season . In the period from January 28 to March 14, 2009, she replaced the Richard With in the timetable , which had to be repaired after damage in a shipyard. On April 4, 2009, the Nordlys went back to scheduled service.

incident

On the northbound voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes , on the morning of September 15, 2011, shortly before berthing in Ålesund, there was a fire in the engine room , which, contrary to initial reports, was not due to an explosion and was discovered at 9:17 a.m.

Some of the 207 passengers were brought to safety with lifeboats , the remaining passengers were able to leave the ship directly at the quay . The Nordlys was tied up at the outer pier of Ålesund harbor to put out the fire . Due to the heavy smoke development, parts of the city center had to be evacuated temporarily. According to the Norwegian police, two crew members were killed in the accident and 16 people were slightly injured by smoke gases .

When pulling the ship to the wharf was created by the extended stabilizers a 38-centimeter crack in the hull , penetrated by the water into the ship, so it flip side was and threatened to capsize. It was not until the next day that Dutch technicians were able to use five pumps to reduce the heel of over 22 degrees and stabilize the ship. The ship was towed into the dry dock of the Fiskerstrand shipyard ( Sula ) for initial repairs .

The cause of the fire could be an insufficiently fixed fuel pump that had been replaced a few days earlier. The leaking fuel could have ignited on hot machine parts. The emergency generator then failed due to a lack of air and the main engine overheated for the same reason, which then stopped. The Nordlys took after a five-month dry-dock period scheduled service on March 20, 2012. and brought first northbound passengers from Bergen to Kirkenes.

Machine system and drive

The diesel-mechanical drive system of the Nordlys consists of the two medium-speed (speed: 500 / min) six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines of the type MaK 6M552C, which each act on a Kamewa variable-pitch propeller via a reduction gear (Lohmann GCK 755) . The ship is powered by two wave generators with an electrical output of 2,875 kVA each . The ship also has two 1,500 kVA generators, which are powered by Bergen Diesel KRG-8 diesel engines. The emergency generator has an output of 265 kVA. Two cross-thruster systems are installed in the bow to aid maneuvering . To reduce rolling movements, the Nordlys is equipped with a pair of stabilizer fins .

Furnishing

The Nordlys can take up to 691 passengers on day trips. She has 475 beds in 226 cabins (17 of them inside). Three of the outside cabins are barrier-free. The 45 vehicle parking spaces are accessed via a hydraulically operated loading ramp on the port side .

The on-board facilities accessible to passengers, the names of which refer to astronomical topics, include the “Stjernesalen” restaurant, the bistro (“Aurora”) and the panorama and observation salon (“Orion” and “Sirius”) with bars on deck 7. In addition, a small fitness room and a sauna are available to passengers.
