The palm kernel oil storage facility in Berlin-Stralau owned by Rengert and Co. is one of the last industrial monuments on the Stralau peninsula , along with the remains of the glassworks and the bottle tower of the Engelhardt brewery . It stands in the northern part of Stralau directly on the banks of the Rummelsburger See and was used both as a factory and as a warehouse . In 2018 it is the only remaining building of the factory of the former palm kernel oil and carbon disulfide factory Rengert and Co.

history

View around 1890

The former palm kernel oil and carbon disulfide factory Rengert and Co. was built in 1881 and was one of the oldest industrial companies on Stralau. The factory was used to extract vegetable oil from palm kernels and other oil-containing seeds and fruits, which was particularly important for the production of margarine . The raw materials were imported from the former German colonies in West Africa . The carbon disulfide obtained in another building was used both for our own needs and passed on to the trade.

The storage facility opposite the new building

After the company filed for bankruptcy in 1899 due to new technological developments, the building was often sold and in 1921 it became the property of Viktoriamühle. From then until 1989 it was used as a mill and until 1990 as a granary and animal feed production facility. It was the only one of three warehouses on the peninsula to survive the Second World War. In 1945 it was sold to the Berlin Osthafenmühlen.

In the 1990s, the Dutch architect Herman Hertzberger, in cooperation with his Berlin contact architect Inken Baller, built a residential complex to the west of the storage facility, which is opposite in a quarter circle around the palm kernel oil storage facility and forms a strong contrast to the old industrial building. The nearby, former private road, running from the streets Am Speicher and Fischzug over Bahrfeldtstrasse, was named Palmkernzeile on July 15, 1999.

The store itself was empty until 2007 and was unused. From the storage Stralau GmbH of palm kernel oil storage should be equipped with 24 exclusive Eigentumsloftwohnungen. However, the expansion was postponed several times, except for the new roofing and cleaning of the facade. In autumn 2010 the Irish investor Glen Pearson and his company Lakestar Investment acquired the palm kernel oil storage facility from a previous Russian owner. After renovation, five residential units with a size between 190 and 550 square meters were created.

architecture

The six-storey building with a length of 50 meters was built in 1883–1885 by the Berlin master builder Albert Biebendt and is considered a typical industrial building of historicism . The building also had its own ship mooring, which still existed in 2018 and is mainly used by anglers.

The wall surfaces, consisting of red facing bricks , are divided vertically by pilasters and horizontally by cornices . The comparatively low floor height is characteristic of its function as a warehouse. The building is supported by two rows of continuous steel columns inside. They are hollow and were also originally used as pipes. The roof is equipped with a gable . Also noteworthy are the wrought iron stairs from the time it was built and a roller mill from the 1920s.
