Inken Baller

Inken Baller (born May 23, 1942 in Tondern , Denmark ) is a German architect who lives and works in Berlin . Baller was a professor at the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU) in Cottbus .

Life

Baller worked from 1967 to 1989 with her husband, the architect Hinrich Baller , who is now divorced from her , in an office community. From 1985 she was visiting professor, from 1989 full professor at the University of Kassel . From 1996 to 2007 she held the chair for designing and building existing buildings at the BTU in Cottbus, where she was also vice-president for teaching.

After separating from Hinrich Baller, Inken Baller successfully continued her work as an architect with her own projects. One of their creations is the " WeiberWirtschaft " building in Berlin in 1990, a renovation of the existing structure under special economic and ecological aspects. Baller's contribution to the “My Wish House” competition organized by Stern magazine in 1996 was widely recognized and made it famous outside of the architectural community.

She retired on May 23, 2007 .

interpretation

The architecture of Inken and Hinrich Baller is relatively independent and does not follow any of the contemporary mainstreams. Its features are reminiscent of Art Nouveau , but increasingly relies on modern constructions such as concrete, steel and glass. Baller u. Sees the roots of her architectural work. a. with the architects Bruno Taut , Hugo Häring , Bernhard Hermkes and Hans Scharoun . As one of the few architects, she managed to loosen up the Berlin urban structure in its high density and heaviness (“stone Berlin”) in some places.
