Herman Hertzberger (born July 6, 1932 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch architect. He is a representative of structuralism in architecture. With his buildings and theories he made a significant contribution to this architectural trend.

Life

Hertzberger studied architecture at the Technical University of Delft . After completing his studies, he opened his own architecture office in 1958. From 1959 to 1963 he was part of the editorial team of Forum magazine, along with Aldo van Eyck and Jaap Bakema . In 1970 he was appointed professor at the Technical University in Delft, from 1982 to 1986 he taught as a visiting professor at the University of Geneva, where he held a professorship from 1986 to 1993. From 1990 to 1995 he also taught at the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam. Hertzberger was made an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Belgium in 1975 and a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1991 . The Association of German Architects (BDA) made him an honorary member in 1983.

One of Hertzberger's most important buildings is the administration building of the insurance company Centraal Beheer in Apeldoorn (1968–1972), in which he created “polyvalent rooms” that were given different facilities depending on the tastes of the employees. Centraal Beheer is one of the influential role models of the participation movement of the 1960-70s, together with the Diagoon stores in Delft and other projects. The initiator of the participation in architecture - the participation of the later individual users in the design process - was John Habraken with his book and manifesto The Bearers and the People from 1961.

Herman Hertzberger's construction activity was concentrated in the Netherlands, but he also realized buildings in Germany, Italy and Japan.
