Arnulf Lüchinger
Arnulf Lüchinger (born February 22, 1941 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss - Dutch architect , author and publisher of architectural publications . He recognized structuralism in architecture as a new trend and launched it internationally. He has lived in The Hague with his family since 1970 .
Life
Architecture education
Arnulf Lüchinger attended the evening college of St. Gallen from 1964 to 1968 and was involved in the interior restoration of the St. Gallen baroque cathedral , which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 . A former member of his family worked in the same cathedral, the musician Martin Vogt . Lüchinger left Switzerland in 1969 and worked from 1969 to 1970 in the Michael Scott office in Dublin , which was awarded the RIBA Gold Medal in 1975 . Here he came into contact with the international architecture scene and got to know the work of the Dutch Aldo van Eyck , Herman Hertzberger , Piet Blom and Jacob Bakema . Since his partner came from the Netherlands, the opportunity arose to pursue a second degree in architecture at the TU Delft , where Van Eyck, Hertzberger and Bakema were professors.
Launch of the architectural trend structuralism
During the training at the TU Delft from 1971 to 1976 it became clear that a new architectural trend was emerging in the Netherlands. The architectural historian Francis Strauven wrote about it in 2014: "Dutch structuralism as an architectural trend was recognized and launched internationally by the Swiss architect Arnulf Lüchinger, since 1974." In 2009 Tomas Valena organized the international symposium "Structuralism Reloaded" in Munich , to which Lüchinger was invited as a guest of honor. From this symposium, the book "Structuralism Reloaded" was published in 2011 with 47 articles by international authors, including one by Lüchinger.
Architecture office and architecture publisher
During his apprenticeship in Delft and afterwards, Lüchinger worked as a freelancer in The Hague , combining an architectural office and an architectural publisher (Arch Edition). The two houses in St. Gallenkappel received the publicity of his completed buildings in international magazines, in the German-language magazine B + W 12/1977 and in the Japanese magazine A + U 2/1979 with the title "Contemporary Houses of the World". In the 1990s Lüchinger worked for a few years in Switzerland, among other things as a partner and design architect in the Werner Künzler office in Arbon , with whom he had already worked in St. Gallen 1965–1969 .
Visual arts
In the foreword to the book Structuralism in Architecture and Urban Development , Lüchinger wrote (according to the opinion of an architecture critic): "I found the way to the architectural trend structuralism through my interest in the fine arts: painting, sculpture and architecture. The examples of buildings shown here are selected according to artistic Quality as well as according to the ideological principles of the new trend. " Lüchinger's interest in the visual arts is also expressed in the fact that from 2002 to 2007 he attended and successfully completed evening training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague . He was then invited to set up a solo exhibition in 2008 in the De Fietsenstalling gallery in The Hague.
structuralism
Recognized new architectural trends and launched internationally
Forty years after Lüchinger's first article on structuralism, Francis Strauven wrote in 2014 about Lüchinger's contribution to the emergence of the new architectural trend. Strauven added that structuralism was included in international literature through Kenneth Frampton, among others . Jürgen Joedicke was involved in the emergence of the new trend . In 1976 he commissioned Lüchinger to write a book about structuralism after the structuralism topic number B + W 1/1976 had been well received in the professional world. - With regard to the naming of the new trend, it should be noted that various terms existed before 1974. In the 1966 jury report for the Valkenswaard Town Hall competition project by Herman Hertzberger , the visionary remark was: "This design is more reminiscent of a structure than a building." In the article "Function, Structure and Symbol, 1966", Kenzo Tange wrote about the structural process in urban development, which Udo Kultermann described in 1970 as "Structuralism". In 1969, when describing four competition projects for the Amsterdam City Hall, Arnaud Beerends used the terms "structuralism" and "structuralists" in the text. In 1973, in another article by Arnaud Beerends about the office building Centraal Beheer by Herman Hertzberger, "structuralism" was once in the text.
