Kenneth Frampton

Kenneth Frampton (* 1930 in Woking , Surrey ) is a British-American architect , architectural historian and author. Frampton is Professor of Architecture at Columbia University , New York.

Life

From 1950 to 1956, Kenneth Frampton was trained at the Architectural Association in London. After two years in the British Army, he traveled to Israel for a year. He then worked in a London architecture firm, then for three years as editor of Architectural Design magazine . In 1965 he left for the USA.

From 1964 to 1972 he taught at Princeton University , from 1972 to 1974 at Columbia University, from 1974 to 1977 at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1977 he returned to Columbia University.

He also taught at the ETH Zurich , the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam, the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne and at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio . Frampton was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1993 and the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2012. In 2018, Frampton was awarded the Golden Lion at the 16th Venice International Architecture Biennale for his life's work .
