Jürgen Joedicke (born June 26, 1925 in Erfurt ; † May 6, 2015 in Stuttgart ) was a German architect , architectural theorist and university lecturer for architecture.

Life

Jürgen Joedicke, son of a wholesale agent, studied architecture at the University of Architecture and Fine Arts in Weimar from 1946 to 1950 after graduating from high school and completing an apprenticeship in concrete construction . In 1950 he completed his studies with a diploma and in the same year came from the GDR to the Technical University of Stuttgart . There he taught structural engineering as an assistant from 1950 to 1956 . In 1953 Joedicke started writing a dissertation on the subject of “Construction and Form. A study of construction from 1895 to 1933 in Germany " PhD . In 1958 he completed his habilitation and Joedicke became a lecturer and lecturer for architectural theory and the lines of development in modern architecture. In doing so, he created decisive prerequisites for an expansion of the previously known architectural theory. In 1963 he was appointed associate professor and in 1967 he was appointed full professor . From 1967 to 1993 he headed the Institute for Foundations of Modern Architecture (IGMA) at the Technical University of Stuttgart . This institute was the first in Germany to explicitly deal with “architectural theory”.

From 1957 Joedicke also worked as a freelance architect and focused on hospital construction as well as sports and office buildings. In 1967 he won - together with Günter Behnisch , Frei Otto , Fritz Auer and Heinz Isler - the ideas competition for the Olympic site in Munich.

Joedicke was an honorary member of the Hungarian Association of Architects MESZ from 1976, in 1980 he received an honorary doctorate from the Academy for Architecture and Fine Arts in Istanbul and in 1986 an honorary doctorate from the University of Dortmund .

Jürgen Joedicke died on May 6, 2015, a few weeks before his 90th birthday.

Journalistic activity

From 1967 to 1979 Jürgen Joedicke was editor of the architecture magazine “Bauen + Wohnen” (later: “ Werk, Bauen + Wohnen ”) in Zurich. In addition, Joedicke published numerous articles and books on modern architecture, on the topics of architectural theory and architectural space, as well as organic building . His books have been translated into several languages.
