Institute for Fundamentals of Modern Architecture and Design

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Institute for Fundamentals of Modern Architecture and Design (IGmA or IGMA) is an institute of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Stuttgart , founded in 1967 “against the theoretical hostility of a dogmatically rigid modernity” , which began teaching in 1968. The institute, which feels equally committed to theory and practice, has been under the direction of Stephan Trüby since April 2018 . The today's largest and oldest architectural theory dedicated institute in Germany belongs next to the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture at ETH Zurich, that of Peter Eisenman co-founded Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New York and founded likewise at the University of Stuttgart magazine ARCH + to of a group all established institutions in 1967/68 that define the discipline of architectural theory.

Institute founder Jürgen Joedicke (2005)

The IGMA was founded in 1967 by Jürgen Joedicke at the University of Stuttgart. In the same year Joedicke was appointed full professor from associate professor and won the ideas competition for the Olympic site in Munich together with Günter Behnisch , Fritz Auer , Winfried Büxel , Erhard Tränkner and Carlo Weber . Under his leadership, the IGMA devoted itself to the history of modern architecture and interpretations of contemporary building. The examination of the theoretical foundations of architecture and their implementation in practice made the IGMA the first nationwide institute to explicitly deal with " architectural theory ". In the series of documents of modern architecture at the institute, influential writings by protagonists of contemporary events such as Rayner Banham , Georges Candilis , Alexis Josic , Shadrach Woods , Jo van den Broek , Jaap Bakema and Julius Posener were published by Karl Krämer Verlag between 1961 and 1987 . Also with Krämer, the institute published the so-called work reports on planning methodology between 1969 and 1975 , which outlined the step away from object-oriented design by formalizing the planning process.

In 1993 Werner Durth took over the management of the IGMA, which from then on deals with the relationship between tradition and modernity. His understanding of the direction of the institute argues that “architectural history should not be viewed as a history of style, but rather in the sequence of design strategies that were developed from specific problem areas. How have aesthetic and social ambitions translated into spatial forms through the design of architecture under certain circumstances? What have architects learned from each other in the historical process and from other actors in the process of social change - from politicians, artists and scientists, for example? And what shoulders are we standing on today? "

Werner Durth, who, together with Jörn Düwel and Niels Gutschow, presented a two-volume standard work on architecture and urban planning in the GDR in 1999 , changed the name of the institute from Fundamentals of Modern Architecture to Fundamentals of Modern Architecture under the impression of the opening of the Eastern Bloc .

After Werner Durth moved to the Technical University of Darmstadt , Wolfgang Schwinge took over the management of the IGMA for three years. In 2000, Schwinge renewed the institute's commitment to its founding year 1968 in an essay published in the book Positions .

Gerd de Bruyn, Head of the IGma (2001-2018)

In 2001, Gerd de Bruyn became the new head of the institute, who further thought its traditions and expanded them to include the discussion of pop-cultural phenomena. In the issue 171 Pop, Ökonomie, Achtung of the architecture magazine ARCH + co-edited by the IGMA , the institute expressed the following thesis:

“Only when the behavior and self-image of architects becomes more modern (one could also say: more economic, more radical, more political, more subversive) than before, only when they understand and market their designs as professional services and aesthetic products, will architecture become in to have arrived at the modern age. Especially when dealing with pop culture, its aesthetics, its contradictions and recipes for success, the architects will be able to successfully break free from the spell of building mastery and redefine their contribution to modern culture. "

Under Gerd de Bruyn, the research group Baubotanik established at the IGMA in 2007 , which developed methods of constructing living structures with living plants. Also in 2007 the first edition of the Archzines Junk Jet appeared , which is published by the institute staff Asli Serbest and Mona Mahall and whose address is given as " Junk Jet c / o IGMA ".

In 2008 the 40th birthday of the IGMA was celebrated in a circus tent with a broad program with great participation from the fields of architecture and architectural theory. On the occasion of the anniversary, an issue of the magazine Wolkenkuckucksheim , which deals with theory, philosophy of science and methodological issues of architecture, was published , the articles of which were also used in issue 1/2009 of the architecture magazine der architekt to honor the institute.

On the occasion of Gerd de Bruyn's retirement in 2018, both Ursula Baus and Georg Vrachliotis described the IGMA as "legendary."

The IGMA has been working under the direction of Stephan Trüby since April 2018.
