Georges Candilis (also Georgios Kandylis, Greek Γεώργιος Κανδύλης , born April 9, 1913 in Baku ; † May 10, 1995 in Paris) was a Greek architect , urban planner and member of Team 10 , a group of architects that existed from 1953 to 1981, also Team X or Team Ten called.

Life

In 1925 he moved with his family from Russia to Athens , where he studied architecture at the Technical University .

From 1945 he worked with Le Corbusier in Paris . He stayed there and opened his own office in 1954, later (1975) another office was added in Athens. Candilis turned his main focus on social housing, as well as housing in general. Its probably most important building in Germany is the main building of the humanities and social science institutes of the Free University of Berlin , which was executed from 1967 after an international architectural competition in 1963, which Candilis won together with the team 10 . Due to its rust-red facade, made entirely of Corten steel , it is often jokingly referred to in the local Berlin press as the rust arbor .
