Life

After studying literature with Ralph-Rainer Wuthenow, musicology with Ludwig Finscher at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and a short interlude at the local University of Music and Performing Arts , Gerd de Bruyn attended the architecture class directed by Günter Bock the Städelschule . He then founded the AAM team of architects with Robert March and Berthold Ressler, which attracted attention in several exhibitions with unusual projects and drawings.

At the end of the 1980s he became editor-in-chief of the Baukultur magazine of the DAI (Association of German Architects and Engineers' Associations), a few years later the urban planner Thomas Sieverts persuaded him to do an apprenticeship and doctorate. In 1995 Gerd de Bruyn received his doctorate in sociology from the Technical University of Darmstadt under Helmut Dahmer and in 1997 took over the substitute professorship for urban planning theory at the KHB Art Academy Berlin-Weißensee. Previously, his sociopolitical commitment had led to the establishment of the future workshop living of the association Lobby for the homeless and poor in Frankfurt am Main.

In 2001 he was appointed to the chair for architectural theory at the University of Stuttgart , where he headed the Institute for Fundamentals of Modern Architecture and Design (IGmA) until 2018 . Since moving out of the Roman city (architect: Ernst May) Gerd de Bruyn has lived in Tübingen with his wife Annette Busche and daughter Charlotte. He is liaison lecturer at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and was a member of the board of directors of the International Center for Cultural and Technical Research (IZKT) from 2001 to 2014 , which he temporarily headed. Gerd de Bruyn is co-editor of the “Culture and Technology” series, sits on the advisory board of Edition ArchitekturDenken and on the editorial board of the BDA magazine Der Architekt . In 2012 he founded the SRMotorradmanufaktur with Andreas Gallo and a year later with Wolfgang Reif the Edition Staub.

Act

After journalistic, editorial and curatorial work for the DAI, the DWB and after projects with the architect Johannes Peter Hölzinger, Gerd de Bruyn switched to teaching in the 1990s. At the IGmA , in addition to the cultural and architectural theory content of the lectures and seminars, the focus is on conceptual design that Günter Bock introduced into the architecture theory of the Städelschule. De Bruyn retained the interdisciplinary character of the institute and expanded it by examining phenomena such as fashion and the challenges of new media, which are addressed in the institute's own publication series and the biannual English-language magazine Junk Jet. Further research areas were the consideration of the scientific character of architecture as well as the theory and practice of building with living plants (building botany ) in collaboration with Ferdinand Ludwig.
