Polar class 6

The Roald Amundsen is a cruise ship operated by the Hurtigruten AS shipping company and the first in the world to have a hybrid drive . It is named after Roald Amundsen , a Norwegian navigator and polar explorer.

General

In April 2016, Hurtigruten AS placed two newbuildings under reserve from Kleven Verft , which were to go into service in July 2018 and 2019.

The Roald Amundsen was commissioned on June 30, 2016 together with the sister ship Fridtjof Nansen from the Norwegian Kleven Verft . The originally planned cost per ship was estimated at US $ 220 million . Blocks of the ship's hull were subcontracted by the Gdańsk Montex Shipyard. The ship, which was originally due to be delivered in summer 2018, was laid down on March 1, 2017 . After the launch on February 17, 2018, delivery was initially planned for the same year. The interior work in Kleven Verft was delayed in the final phase. The Roald Amundsen was delivered on June 25, 2019.

The maiden voyage began on July 3, 2019 in Tromsø, Norway , heading for Hamburg .

technology

The Roald Amundsen is the first expedition ship in its class with a hybrid drive, a combination of diesel-electric and pure electric drive , fed by batteries . The hull is specially developed for the polar regions ( polar class 6 ) and has an ax bow . It is driven by two propeller pods .

Furnishing

The ship has a very distinctive viewing deck in the bow area, which is located on two decks with an indoor and outdoor area. Also in the bow area is the so-called "Amundsen Science Center", a place where you can find out more about the destinations visited and do your own research. The ship also has three restaurants: Aune, the main restaurant; Fredheim, with international cuisine and Lindstrøm, the specialty restaurant. There is also a spa and wellness area, a fitness studio (with outdoor area) and a sauna on board. At the stern there is also a pool deck with an infinity pool and two whirlpools. Above the bridge there is a spacious lounge with a view in the direction of travel and on both sides. In the hull of the ship there is the on-board hospital and a room that is used as a starting point for expeditions.

Sister ships

The development and construction of the Roald Amundsen is part of a $ 850 million investment by Hurtigruten AS with the aim of building the world's most environmentally friendly expedition fleet. The sister ship Fridtjof Nansen is currently being built on Kleven Verft and is scheduled to begin its maiden voyage in 2020. A third ship was ordered in October 2018 and is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2021.

Environmental sustainability

In an article in taz from July 2019, Roald Amundsen's hybrid drive was criticized. The currently available battery packs - which can also be charged via shore connection - are to be switched on during the voyage if there is a higher demand for electricity or to serve exclusively for the ship's propulsion at times. However, with a capacity of just 1.36 megawatt hours, they are currently only sufficient for a journey of 20 to a maximum of 30 minutes. The ship was built with government funding, it can be retrofitted with batteries for a further 5 MWh.

Sigurd Enge, shipping expert at the Norwegian environmental protection organization Bellona, speaks of an important step forward in the direction of the vision of predominantly electrically powered shipping and in terms of energy efficiency. Thor Haakon Bakke, board member of the Norwegian Miljøpartiet De Grønne acknowledges the ship's lower greenhouse gas emissions, but cruises to Antarctica and the Northwest Passage require high energy consumption plus induced air travel by passengers, so they are not compatible with the climate targets.
