The Ax Bow ( English ax bow ) is a special bow shape . It is characterized by a wide fore section with a vertical stem .

The ax bow was developed so that the watercraft can cut the waves better ( English wave-piercing hull ). The stern is pulled down so far that it forms the lowest point of the ship's hull . After cutting through the crest, the bow remains in the water with its lower edge in the following wave trough. This avoids hard setting into the sea, reduces pitching and enables a steady high speed level.

Watercraft for traffic, supply and rescue operations are built with this bow shape. Examples are the suppliers of the Damen Shipyards Group , the new lifeboats of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (KNRM) or the frost trawlers of the Cuxhaven series .
