The Groot Cross-Bow is a bow shape without a bulbous bow, the stem of which tilts backwards above the waterline. The advantages of the shape are the lower flow resistance and higher speeds in difficult sea conditions. Due to the more complete stern in the area just above the water surface, ships with cross-bow achieve a higher lift with less immersion, which leads to softer swell movements of the ship's hull and lower negative accelerations.
history
The company from Leek near Groningen designed the Groot Cross-Bow in the years up to 2011. The primary goal of the development was to improve the sea behavior of vehicles in difficult sea conditions. The bow shape is designed in such a way that it divides waves and deflects them to the side. The Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute was involved in the implementation of the Cross-Bow . In model tests, which were carried out in conventional towing tests and in the ice tank, the sea behavior and the ice permeability of the concept were tested. In 2011, the Bodewes shipyard in Hoogezand began building the first ship in a series of vehicles with the new type of bow, the Bodewes Eko Trader 8250 . A multipurpose dry freighter with hull number Yno 760 was launched on July 21, 2011 as UAL Africa in Winschoterdiep , followed by UAL Bodewes on March 2, 2012 .
In the meantime, several ship designs with cross-bow were created. In addition to the Bodewes series, for example, four units of a series called Groot Super Green 8500 have been built at the Chinese shipyard Jiangsu Yangzijang Shipbuilding in Jiangsu .
