Consolea falcata is a species of plant in the genus Consolea from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet is derived from the Latin adjective falcatus for 'sickle-shaped' and refers to the shape of the shoot sections.

description

Consolea falcata grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of up to 1.5 meters. The shiny dark green shoot sections are sometimes sickle-shaped. They are 35 inches long and 9 inches wide. Occasionally there are small bumps on the shoot surface, but they do not form a network-like pattern. There are two to eight needle-like, rough, yellowish to light brown thorns , but they can also be missing. They are 1 to 4 inches long.

The flowers are reddish and 2 to 5 centimeters in diameter.

Systematics and distribution

Consolea falcata is common in northwest Haiti .

It was first described as Opuntia falcata in 1931 by Erik Leonard Ekman and Erich Werdermann . Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in the genus Consolea in 1936 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is it as " Critically Endangered (CR) , d". H. critically endangered. The species is known from only one location and in 2006 there were only fewer than 10 individual plants left. The 2008 floods could have completely wiped out the species. If a few specimens are still present, the development of the population is considered to be decreasing.
