Erik Leonard Ekman (born October 14, 1883 in Stockholm , † January 15, 1931 in Santiago de los Caballeros , Dominican Republic) was a Swedish botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Ekman ".

Live and act

Ekman grew up in the central Swedish city of Jönköping and made his bachelor's degree at Lund University in 1907 , where he also completed his doctoral thesis in 1914.

On the way to Brazil he was supposed to collect plants in Cuba and Hispaniola on behalf of Ignaz Urban and Carl Lindman , but then stayed in the Caribbean for 17 years instead of the planned 20 months . About 36,000 herbarium specimens are known from Ekman ; based on these collections, around 2000 species were newly described. Some geographical discoveries can also be traced back to him, for example he identified Pico Duarte as the highest mountain in the Caribbean. In 1931 he died in Santiago de los Caballeros of complications from pneumonia , malaria and other diseases.
